Tech Baseball Sweeps WAC POW Awards Once Again
May 4, 2009
DENVER -- For the second time this season, Louisiana Tech has swept the Western Athletic Conference Player of the Week awards as Devon Dageford and Jeb Stefan were named Hitter of the Week and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, by the conference office on Monday.
The awards reflect the week of April 27-May 3.
The honor is Dageford's second, while it is Stefan's first. On April 20, exactly two weeks ago, Tech swept the conference player of the week awards as pitcher Mike Jefferson accompanied Dageford in the selections.
Dageford had another solid week for the Bulldogs. In five games, he went 10-for-20 at the plate with six extra base hits, including a triple and two home runs. Against Sacramento State on April 27, he hit a go-ahead home run, his 19th long ball of the season. He just missed hitting for the cycle in the third game of the series at Hawai'i. Tech's right fielder cracked a solo home run, a two-run triple and a double, in order. In the series finale, he recorded two singles and a double. He finished the week with an impressive 1.050 slugging percentage and a perfect fielding percentage.
Stefan helped set the tone of Tech's series at Hawai'i in the series opener by throwing his best game as a Bulldog. He did not allow a hit in the first four innings of the contest and held the Rainbows scoreless through seven innings. In a career-high 7 2/3 innings, he allowed only one run (it was earned) on five hits and a walk. The right-hander from Lafayette, La. also struck out a career-high 12 batters and forced a double play in the win.
The other hitter of the week nominations were Fresno State junior first baseman Alan Ahmady, Nevada freshman designated hitter/outfielder Nick Melino and New Mexico State junior infielder Wade Reynoso.
The other pitcher of the week nominations were Fresno State senior Holden Sprague, Nevada junior Chris Garcia and New Mexico State junior Jared Jordan.
