Stone to be inducted into Ark-La-Tex Sports Museum of Champions Aug. 4

June 14, 2018

RUSTON -- Louisiana Tech Class of 2013 Athletics Hall of Famer George Stone is among the five inductees into the Ark-La-Tex Sports Museum of Champions Saturday, Aug. 4, at 6:30 p.m. at the Shreveport Convention Center.

Other members of the Class of 2018 are former Tech athletics director and LSU head football coach Jerry Stovall, Haynesville star and 10-year NFL veteran Demetric Evans, Grambling basketball Kodak All-American Kenny Simpson, and the late Don Shows, a Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame coach who won eight state titles at West Monroe High School.

Stone was a two-sport star at both Ruston High and, from 1964-66, Louisiana Tech. He was All-Gulf States Conference in baseball as a freshman and sophomore and led the basketball team in scoring as a sophomore. He was drafted by Atlanta after his sophomore baseball season. He played eight full seasons in the National League, first with the Braves and then with the New York Mets before retiring after a rotator cuff injury before the 1976 season at age 29.

For the Mets in 1973, he was 12-3 with a 2.80 ERA and a league-best winning percentage of .800. His eight straight wins in eight starts down the stretch helped the Mets come from 12-and-a-half games back to win the National League East. New York beat Cincinnati’s Big Red Machine in the NL Championship Series and lost to Oakland in seven games in the ’73 World Series.

The public is invited to a free open house at the Shreveport Convention Center from 5 to 6:15 p.m. Aug. 4. Tickets to the 6:30 p.m. Induction Ceremony are $45 per person or $360 for a table of eight. Reserved table sponsorships are available for $360 and include eight tickets, signage on the table, and special recognition in the banquet program.

For tickets, contact Dr. George Bakowski, 318-868-6118, or write the Ark-La-Tex Sports Museum of Champions, 955 Pierremont Road, Suite #400, Shreveport, LA 71106; you can enclose a check for tickets and have your tickets mailed or you can pick them up at the door.

The event is held in the summer of even calendar years.

Other inductees into the Sports Museum from Tech include Mickey Slaughter, A.L. Williams, Leon Barmore, Kim Mulkey, Billy Jack Talton, Scotty Robertson (Stone’s basketball coach at Tech), and many more.
