Louisiana Tech vs. Longwood
Head coach Michael White
"I am really proud of our guys with the mentality that they had tonight. Their approach was fantastic. We knew that Longwood had won at TCU and we beat that into our guy's heads as much as possible. They really played well at TCU and in their last outing they were down four at halftime to a really good Ohio University team on their home floor. We knew we would have to come out and play well. The hope was that we would play well and find ways to improve and get a win against a Division I opponent. I am very surprised that we won in the fashion that we did. I guess it just goes to show you that we can beat a lot of teams if we shoot the ball like that. We were very unselfish and turned down average shots to get really good shots. We had a lot of conversions. It was as good of an offensive performance that I have been associated with."
On Longwood pushing the ball on offense:
"They play fast and they are good in transition offense. That was one of the big keys for us defensively, probably the biggest, trying to get back and make sure we can set our defense because it is what we pride ourselves on. Offensively, we have gotten better on it throughout the year, pushing and getting better looks quicker and we thought they were pretty good at it on film. It was a track meet for a while and fortunately we were converting as that lead spread."
On being surprised when opponents try to play uptempo:
"Not really, I think different coaches play to their strengths, as opposed to playing to the opponents' weaknesses. It is always a decision to be made when scouting a team. `Should we adjust to them or should we try to get them to adjust to us?' Again, I think Longwood has been good in transition offense and they tried to do that tonight and were successful at times."
On the team feeling from the bench:
"Our players were playing with so much confidence and we were in such a good offensive rhythm, although we kept it very simple. Our guys just executed our simple base secondary stuff. When they were playing at that high of a level it gave us confidence to sit down and watch them play and cheer them on. We were hitting on all cylinders offensively tonight."
On this performance helping in future games:
"The outcome was a bit surprising. I am proud of the maturity level. I am proud of the way we continued to play the right way even when the lead spread. I thought our guys took ultimate ownership over our offensive possessions just by getting each other really good shots. They played very unselfishly."
On if the team is starting to peak:
"I think so. We talk about it a lot but have not gotten a lot of feedback as most of our conversation was about Longwood not about us. We will be off tomorrow and then we will regroup and have some conversation on the film, learn what we can from this game and start looking forward to those Florida teams coming to the TAC, our first competitions in Conference USA. We are excited about the opportunities and we know we have to continue to improve but I do think overall there is a confidence level that is higher than what we have had in the locker room since we have been here. Hopefully they feel like they are peaking because I feel like we are. With that being said we cannot allow complacency to creep in. We have to continue what we are doing."
