Recap |  Final Stats |  Notes

Opening statement:

"I thought we had a great team effort. It takes a team effort to slow down an offense that is that potent and a player in Vince Hunter who is that good and he still got pretty good numbers. It was just a great performance defensively for us and on the glass as well. We have definitely grown in those two areas and it was actually a mediocre night for us offensively, but it was good enough to help us get the win."

On outscoring UTEP in the paint and outrebounding them:

"I thought it would be very, very difficult for us to do it. I thought that if we were to win this game, we would have to rebound at a higher level than we have been doing. I did not expect it to be at this level, but honestly I expected us to score a few more points. Just when you need it, your guys step up and rally around the fact that we need to improve our weaknesses. I am proud of our guys. They have worked really hard. Our guys in the locker room know how important a win this is for this team and this program. Winning at UTEP is very significant."

On the defensive focus:

"Both our starters and our bench have embraced the fact that [defensive focus] has got to be goal number one. It has got to be each one of our guys biggest job when they are between the lines. It is not about how many shots I can get up or how many I can score or whether or not coach is going to call the next play for me. They have rallied around the defensive side of things to a whole other level the last three or four weeks."

On Raheem Appleby:

"He was incredible. In my opinion, that is the best game of his career because he was so efficient offensively and he has not made a defensive mistake in a couple of weeks probably. He has given every ounce of effort that he can give physically. He is also leading. I cannot ask anymore of Raheem Appleby right now."

On UTSA:

"We knew coming into the weekend that we had two tough tests. UTSA is definitely improved. They gave us a heartbreaking loss a couple of years ago. They will be very prepared. I have a lot of respect for their staff and we will have to do whatever we can to hydrate and get enough rest and to overcome the travel in order to give ourselves a chance."
