Opening Statement:

“I thought the way the game started; it would have been really easy to get frustrated. We could not score and UTEP did a really nice job of slowing down any types of breaks. We did not get a lot of great looks and did not make a lot of shots early. We just stuck together and kept finding ways to score against their zones and got some stops. It was a real collective effort. We had five guys in double-figures and we defended them well from three. We were able to turn them over a good bit, not a lot of live ball turnovers, but still we played solid defense.”

On Boykins:

“He has worked so hard to be a great shooter and he has always been, but he has spent so much time before games, after games, before practice, after practice and during practice. I love seeing him shoot so confidently. He is a green light shooter for us. Any chance he has to shoot one in rhythm, we want him to shoot the ball.”

On Dayon and Jacobi playing off of each other:

“Those guys are playing really well. The great part is that they are just sophomores. They are really growing and learning right in front of our eyes and doing it in different ways. They are both catching and shooting the ball really well. Their defense is improving as well. They are both now starting to take pride in guarding some of these really good guards we are playing against.”

On slow start:

“That is what they do; they are so good at changing defenses. They were making us play against their 2-3 zone with less time on the clock. We had such few possessions where we could just fly it up the floor. They got into that 1-2-2 and then we get into that zone and now have 15 seconds to go against it. We started to get into a rhythm after we made a couple of adjustments. The guys did a nice job from that point forward.”

On bench scoring:

“I think we have displayed different ways of finding a way. Some days it is forcing very few turnovers, but rebounding the ball very well. Sometimes it is great bench play. Sometimes it is really balanced scoring from the starters. That is what I have encouraged this team to do, just keep finding a way. Find a way, whatever that is. We always need that energy from our bench and from our starters.”

On turnovers:

“We felt like they were really going to drive the ball on us and we really tried to chew up those driving lanes. So many of those turnovers were dead ball turnovers, so they did not turn into breaks and gave them a chance to set their 1-2-2 press. I thought we were active and really active in the paint trying to close them out. We really wanted to take them off of the three point line and we got a couple of travels that way. I thought the guys were active tonight.”

On starters’ minutes:

“I think it is a combination of a few things. We keep track of what lineups are playing well together. When a lineup is playing so well together, it is hard to take them out. We just felt like with the type of press they were running, when we got into a flow, it was really hard to break that flow. We had a lot of guys playing major minutes tonight and I told the team in locker room, ‘The great thing when you have balance and guys are playing really well together, you want to keep that rolling.’”

On legends day:

“It was great for me, I know personally, to meet all of them. When I first arrived I was excited to meet everybody and saw a group in the parking lot. It had to be six post players, all 6’8 or 6’9 and I said ‘Can any of you guys come grab a rebound for us tonight.’ They said they could give me one play and I said I’ll take one play from each of you six times. It was really special. There was a room full of people and the passion there was just electric. It was good to share that with everyone.”

On rebounding:

“We forced 15 turnovers in the first half, so there are less rebounds to get for us. I thought in the second half they turned it over a little less and we were able to get some big stops. They went to the foul line and we were able to rebound those. They had some big stops there in the end, where Erik McCree was really a monster on the back board. That was huge for us.”
