Press Conference Quotes - Louisiana Tech vs. Charlotte Thursday, March 13, 2013
Louisiana Tech Head Coach Michael White
"First of all, Mike Kyser was really good. Wow. It was one of the better games in his career. Great job big fella. I thought he did a good job controlling the game on both ends offensively and defensively against a team with a really good frontcourt. He had a huge challenge, he stepped up and took advantage. The assist/turnover ratio was probably the second biggest factor in the game. We did a good job with our pressure, we did a good job offensively valuing the basketball. Alex played very well and Cordarius Johnson had his biggest game in a long time.
On the importance of winning your first Conference USA Tournament game:
"It was important for a lot of reasons. The biggest reason was just getting a win over a good team. Charlotte is really good. This is a very good league. When we looked at who we drew as the 1 seed, we said my goodness, what a hard league. It's Charlotte or UAB. But you look at the draw teams like Southern Miss got, and it's just across the board. Everyone got hard draws. To advance to a semifinal in a very competitive, deep league is exciting. To win on day one is exciting because we have been there before when everything didn't go right for us. Our mentality was right from the tip in terms of playing with our identity, defending and rebounding, playing with a lot of energy. There are a lot of things we will need to continue to clean up as the season extends hopefully. We played hard. I'm proud of our guys' effort and their mentality to do whatever it took to try to advance.
On what they did against Charlotte:
"With Charlotte we talk more about defending in the post, defending high low actions, pressuring passers on the catch, two handed closeouts, high high hand, understanding where they're trying to do with the ball consistently. And we probably do more digging and doubling on the post against Charlotte than most teams. They have a really good front line, a terrific point guard in Henry and guys who can make shots. They're very dangerous. Overall we gave a pretty good defensive effort, which gives us a chance on most nights when we defend like that.
On Southern Miss:
"First impression with Southern Miss is that they're really good. They are unique in their style. They are good with their full court pressure defensively. They are phenomenal, in my opinion, with their zone in the half court. They don't get enough national attention from the media as it relates to how effective their zone is. It was on full display tonight defending UTEP at that high of a level on UTEP's home floor. That's where it all starts with Southern Miss. They are very tough, they are very physical. They are good offensively, I don't want to slight them offensively, but defensively they are elite. Nationally people should talk about Southern Miss' zone. We've got to figure out how we can score, but if you spend too much time figuring how you're going to score you may suffer in other areas because they're good overall as well."
#1 Michale Kyser, Louisiana Tech
On how he gets mentally prepared for the next round:
"I've just got to do everything I can do to try to help this team get another great Conference USA win. Go to sleep, get a little bit of water, can't be dehydrated, just do whatever I can so we can get past this next round.
On how big the game was for him:
"It's like the biggest game of my career. I just had to step up for my team because we had some players like Chris in foul trouble. I had to do whatever I could do to try to get our team to go to the next round, to keep us going, keep us motivated and keep us inside the game."
Charlotte Head Coach Alan Major
"Congratulations to Michael and his team. I thought they made some really big plays when we cut into the lead and got the game within striking distance a few times. They made some big shots and give those guys some credit. I'm proud of this group. I know we didn't quite achieve some of the things we wanted to this year, but we did some things in terms of making a little bit of history early in the season and finishing with three out of four, we've got a lot to build on. We're going to add some pieces to this group next year. This group that we have now is going to get better.
On what Louisiana Tech did to stop them:
"A couple of things, they made some big plays and when we get into striking distance they find a way to make a big three. We got to 11 there and we put them at the foul line and the game got kind of touchy feely in terms of the physicality of it and all that, and it was hard to tell which way was which. To their credit, they made some plays they needed to make and they made some free throws they needed to make so I wish them luck moving forward.
On characterizing the season:
"I think any team that starts out wants to keep playing and get into the next week, whether it be NCAA or NIT or things like that. These guys achieved a lot to know that two straight years they've hung banners in terms of Alaska and Puerto Rico. They have done some things that haven't been done before. This is always a sour taste in your mouth when it comes to an end but every team has high hopes and we're one of those teams. We know we're better than we performed on some of these nights where we didn't get the results we wanted to. We were one or two possessions away on multiple nights from a totally different record. We've got some things to build on. Sometimes this taste in your mouth is the same thing that can drive you forward the next six months."
#15 Pierriá Henry, Charlotte
On what Louisiana Tech did:
"They tried to speed us up and then on offense they tried to deny us so we couldn't get into guard sets as fast as we wanted to. They forced us to screen bodies to create to get each other open. I tip my hat to them and wish them the best of luck.
On the season:
"It had its ups and downs. It was fun while it lasted. It's not the ending we wanted. Me going into my last year and still not having a ring or a conference championship or seeing the big dance, it hurts. But by the same token you've got to use it as motivation to work harder and keep fighting, trying to get better and better. It starts in the offseason and in the season you've got to learn it's a long season. The ball bounces in funny ways. It matters how you respect it and how much work you put into it and hard work pays off. It may not look like it right now, but in the long run I still believe that this team can be a winning program and still make history and life goes on."
