COLLEGE STATION, Texas -
Raheem Abbleby led all players with 20 points but Texas A&M used a 10-2 run in the second half to pull away from Louisiana Tech for the 71-59 victory in both teams season opener Friday night at Reed Arena.
Texas A&M (1-0) was led by Elston Turner’s 15 points while Fabyon Harris scored 14 for the Aggies.
Appleby scored 12 of his 20 points in the first half but did not attempt a shot in the second half until six minutes remained in the game.
Tech trailed 11-10 midway through the first half before the Aggies went on an 11-2 run capped by a Kourtney Roberson dunk on a possession that came off a Jaron Johnson turnover. Tech trailed by nine with 3:49 left in the half before Appleby scored three straight baskets for Tech, cutting the Aggie lead to 28-25 but his luck ran out on the fourth try and Appleby’s turnover led to a fastbreak layup for Turner to close the half.
The second half started slow for the Bulldogs as Louisiana Tech made just one of its first 11 shots after the break with the Aggies taking a 44-32 lead with 11 minutes remaining in the game. The Bulldogs rallied behind Appleby again late in the half as he alone went on a 6-2 run over three minutes late in the game but the Bulldog deficit was too much to overcome.
Friday’s contest marked the first time the two teams have met on the hardwood since a 75-59 win by Texas A&M in College Station in 2006.
