Opening Statement: “I thought that we got better as the game went on. There were some jitters early and I have said a lot, we have some new guys playing minutes in this environment for the first time. I thought as the first half went on, we improved in our press, offensively and man-to-man. I was happy with the performance.”

On large first half run: “I think there was a time in that first half where we got into a nice rhythm on both ends of the floor. We started to create some turnovers and turned them into some good opportunities in transition. That started a flow. I credit the guys for staying locked in defensively.”

On newcomers: “I thought they settled in nicely. The nerves started to dissipate and they were sharing the basketball and taking some good shots. Branden Sheppard played extended minutes and attacked the glass well. Derric Jean showed his athleticism in the open court, making some nice shots. Jy’lan Washington and Da’Shawn Robinson both showed they can do some things on both ends of the floor. It was a good night overall for the new guys.”

On consistency: “They played consistent. They have gotten better with time. I thought Millsaps did some nice things for us to go against, that we do not see as much in practice. They really packed the lane and went underneath on ball screens. They mixed up their coverages. That gave our guys a good look to try and figure out how to go against it. The guys played very consistent with the way they have been in practice.”

On dislikes: “I thought, especially early and late, that we took some chances that were not calculated. We had some breakdowns. Our mentality is that we want to play the possession. Each possession is its own game and we want to be as good as we can be on each possession. I challenge the guys with that. We only played nine guys, so I thought fatigue played a factor. We need to continue to the reps at practice so guys can play an extended time.”

On Derric Jean: “I cannot speak from my own experience of hanging on the rim like that, but I told him if he had not pulled himself up, he would have been fine. He is a freshman and was pretty excited about it, our fans were too.” “I thought he provided a really nice spark for us coming off the bench. He made some nice plays. He got to play extended minutes at the point. I thought he settled in really nicely as a freshman and in his first basketball game.”

On rebounding: “It is something we have talked about since April. Alex Hamilton had 13 and he chased a lot of balls down. We have worked on it every day, several times a day. No matter how big you are, you can check someone out. We are stronger and we expect to be a better rebounding team. We want to be a very good rebounding team. I was happy to see those numbers tonight.”

On UT Arlington: “We know that they are big and physical. They are very well coached. They are going to come in here motivated to play a great game. We need to be ready to guard all of their actions, as well as play a great game offensively. They are going to be a very good team in their league. It is a good game on our schedule. We are excited to play them.”
