Michael White Post-Game Press Conference

Opening Statement:

"Tonight I thought we were pretty locked in mentally. I thought we made a lot of pretty good decisions, defensively. I thought our press was as good as it has been all year. I thought Southern Arkansas was prepared for our press. I thought the energy level was high. We looked a little fresher out there, especially in the second half. Mentally we got recharged over the break. We were really sound with our traps, back flow and lack of fouling. We made less mistakes. If you take three or four of those hard deep threes that (Jaron Davis) hit, who is a heck of a shooter, it would have been arguably our best defensive performance. We outrebounded our first opponent, I know this is not a Conference USA opponent, but it feels good to win that column."

On non-conference schedule:

"We would like to be sitting here 11-2 or 13-0, that being said, it is hard to win on the road. We stole two on the road, but we left some opportunities on the table against quality programs. We have progressed a lot throughout this non-conference schedule. There is no question we are better than we were a couple months ago. The guys have really worked. Our locker room is together and healthy. I thought we were really unselfish tonight and that shows. Guys are not hunting and are locked into what we need to do to continue to improve. We are still a work in progress. We have nine newcomers. I know we are halfway home, but if we can make the strides over the next month and a half that we have made over the last month and a half, we can be very competitive in our league."

On benefits of playing Southern Arkansas:

"More than anything, we get the rust off of us from the break. After the NC State game, if we were to have sat and waited for the Conference USA opener, I would have been very leery of how we would come out and preform. We got the break out of us. We made some improvements, defensively. Guys were flying around the court and communication was really good. I thought the physicality was there for us and we are not a very physical team, obviously, by looking at our numbers. For us, this was as physical as we have played. Outside of rust, the biggest thing was the improvement."

On rebounding:

"It has been a long fall and early winter in regards to rebounding the basketball, especially with how much I have spent and the staff has spent brainstorming and communicating about it. We have watched a lot of film on it. We spend time in the weight room, we talk about it, scream about it, think about it, but we are just not a very good rebounding team. I do feel like we are getting better. I also feel like the guys have embraced the concern. It is not on the guys, it is on me. It is a program deficiency. I did not recruit a 6'9 260 pound designated rebounder. We are a very skilled, good passing team. We are better offensively than any team since I have been here. We are trying to do it as a committee with guys that do not necessarily have natural rebounding characteristics."

On Alex Hamilton:

"Alex was going to score 1,000 points wherever he went, it has nothing to do with his head coach other than begging him to come here until he said yes. He is a wonderful young man. He has overcome some real adversity in his life. He is a great ambassador to this program. I am just really proud of him. He has worked and gotten so much better in other areas. He is passing the ball better, defending better and trying to give up his body as much as he can to help us fix this rebounding issue. He could be on other teams where he is playing the point full time and not asked to get any rebounds. He has been really good and to see him and any of our guys win an award or achieve a milestone is fun to watch. He will accomplish some other things while he is here as well."
