LA Tech Bulldogs Join Coaching for Literacy's Efforts

Jan. 6, 2016

MEMPHIS, Tennessee (January 6, 2016) -- Coaching for Literacy (CFL) is honored to continue its partnership with the LA Tech men's basketball team and head coach Eric Konkol in the nationwide Fight for Literacy. The Bulldogs will host CFL on January 31, 2016, against the UTEP Miners.

LA Tech men's basketball takes part in Coaching for Literacy's Assistant Coach Program for a second straight year joining 17 other NCAA schools and the Washington Wizards in the initiative. Last year the effort generated critical awareness about illiteracy and raised over $2,000 for The Boys and Girls Club of North Central Louisiana.

"LA Tech men's basketball is proud to be a part of Coaching for Literacy's team in the crucial effort to promote literacy work in our communities," said head coach Eric Konkol. "We look forward to providing direct support to the literacy initiatives of The Boys and Girls Club of North Central Louisiana through the Assistant Coach Program."

The mission of Coaching for Literacy is to increase awareness about the number of people in America who are functionally or totally illiterate and the social problems associated with illiteracy.

By leveraging the unique power of collegiate and professional sports, Coaching for Literacy raises money to support effective local literacy programs focused on educating elementary and middle school students.

Coaching for Literacy achieves their mission through the Assistant Coach Program. This program gives two individuals an "all-access" fan experience in exchange for a donation to a local literacy initiative. The donation is then reallocated by CFL to its effective literacy partner. The donor will receive the following perks: a tour of the facilities, courtside seating, access to the locker room, admittance to the postgame press conference and interviews, autographed memorabilia and gameday attire provided by CFL partner Peter Millar.

"Families in Ruston are fortunate to have two great organizations like LA Tech and The Boys and Girls Club of North Central Louisiana supporting their community," said Ryan Viner, executive director of Coaching for Literacy. "This was one of our most successful efforts last year and we look forward to improving upon that success."

The Boys and Girls Club exists to assist children in crisis by providing youth in North Central Louisiana a safe supervised environment where they can develop into positive productive members of society. They offer a safe place to learn and grow, ongoing relationships with caring, adult professionals, life-enhancing programs and character development experiences.

"We are so grateful for the support of Coach Konkol and the LA Tech basketball team for providing the Assistant Coach Program again this year!" said Eldonta' Osborne, CPO of Boys and Girls Club NCL. "Coaching for Literacy supports everything we stand for at the Boys and Girls Club of NCL in our quest to improve every reader we serve. We are honored to partner with LA Tech and Coaching for Literacy."
