LA Tech Travels to Charlotte for Thursday Night Battle
Jan. 11, 2017
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Looking to regroup after a heartbreaking loss on Saturday, Louisiana Tech will be back in action for a two-game Conference USA road swing starting Thursday night at Charlotte at 6 p.m. CT on ESPN3.
The Bulldogs currently sit at 10-6 overall and 2-1 in conference play, while Charlotte enters the contest at 7-8 overall and 1-3 in C-USA action.
Thursday's matchup marks the fifth meeting between the two programs, with LA Tech holding a 4-0 lead in the all-time series, but it has taken overtime to decide a winner in the past two seasons. Louisiana Tech knocked off the 49ers, 93-90, in overtime at the Thomas Assembly Center last season.
LA Tech's last action came on Saturday night when a three pointer with 11 seconds remaining proved to be the game winning shot for UTSA, which handed the Bulldogs their first conference loss of the season. Prior to the loss to UTSA, Louisiana Tech opened conference play with wins over Southern Miss and UTEP.
It has been a bumpy stretch for Charlotte since opening C-USA play with a 101-76 win over North Texas on Dec. 31. Following the victory, Charlotte has now dropped three straight, at home to Rice and road losses to WKU and Marshall. The 49ers do hold wins over both East Carolina and Oregon State in non-conference action.
In those three losses Charlotte has given up an average of 94 points per game. For the season, Charlotte is allowing an average of 83.4 points per game which ranks ninth worst in the NCAA for scoring defense. However, the 49ers will look to keep the pace with a barrage of three pointers as they rank first in C-USA in three-point field goal percentage and third in three point field goals per game.
The 49ers are led by Jon Davis who is averaging just under 20 points a game at 19.1 overall and 16.8 per game in Conference USA games. Andrien White is the second leading scorer for Charlotte, averaging 12.5 points per game and leading the team in three point field goals made.
The Bulldogs continue to be led by senior Erik McCree who has registered double-figures in 15 consecutive games and has eight double-doubles on the season. Jacobi Boykins is averaging 14.9 points per game and is causing headaches for opponents on both ends of the floor. Defensively, the Florida native has 13 steals in the past four games.
Louisiana Tech and Charlotte hadn't met prior to the 49ers joining Conference USA for the 2013-14 season.
Thursday night's game will be broadcast live on ESPN3 and fans will be able to watch by going to WatchESPN.com or by downloading the WatchESPN app from the App Store.
The game can also be heard live on the LA Tech Sports Network on KXKZ 107.5 FM (Ruston) and KJVC 92.7 FM (Mansfield) as well as on the LA Tech X Mobile app. The "Voice of the Bulldogs" Dave Nitz will call the play-by-play and Jack Thigpen will provide analysis.
