Dowdell, Gibson Named LSWA Players of the Week

RUSTON, La. - Louisiana Tech seniors Shanavia Dowdell and Kyle Gibson were named Players of the Week by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association for the week of Jan. 11-17.

Dowdell, a Calera, Ala. native, averaged 20.5 points, 11.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game, all above her season averages, to lead Louisiana Tech to victories over New Mexico State and San Jose State. She shot 59 percent (16-of-27) from the field and recorded her Western Athletic Conference-leading eighth double-double of the season during the week.

Dowdell opened the with 23 points and 16 rebounds in the win over New Mexico State - a team that had already posted non-conference wins over 21st ranked Kansas and Michigan. She then scored 18 points and grabbed seven rebounds in the victory over San Jose State.

Dowdell shared the award with Brittiany Houston of Northwestern State.

Gibson, a Los Angeles, Calif. native, averaged 24.5 points and was 17-of-17 from the free throw line to lead the Bulldogs to wins over Boise State and Fresno State. He scored 17 points, 13 in the second half in a 15-point win over the Broncos.

Gibson scored a career-high 32 points in the win over FSU including a career-high seven three-pointers. During the game, he surpassed the 1,500 point mark at LA Tech, just the 14th player to do so.

It is Gibson's fourth LSWA Player of the Week award and his second consecutive honor. Dowdell, who is also the Western Athletic Conference Player of the Week, won the award for the second time this season.
