Bulldogs Go for Road Sweep on Saturday
Feb. 5, 2016
DENTON, Texas -- Louisiana Tech will go for the Texas road sweep on Saturday when they face off against North Texas in an afternoon game at 3 p.m. inside the Super Pit.
The game will be broadcast live on the American Sports Network with Dave Barnett and Chris Walker calling the action. Along with the TV stations carrying the game, fans can also watch the live stream by subscribing to LA Tech All-Access.
LA Tech (17-5, 6-3 C-USA) is a winner of four straight, but winning the fifth will prove to be difficult according to recent history. Since the Bulldogs joined Conference USA, they have only been able to pull off the weekend sweep once (out of seven).
"We need to rejuvenate and get some rest," head coach Eric Konkol said. "The guys will enjoy this one tonight and the coaches will get right to work on North Texas. We have got to have a good practice tomorrow and get ready to play. North Texas is another team that can score in bunches. They are going to be on their home floor. We will have to be ready."
The `Dogs are halfway home to doing it a second time though after coming back to down the Rice Owls, 90-78, on the back of Alex Hamilton.
The senior guard went off for 31 points which tied his career high that he set his sophomore year in the overtime win at Oklahoma while also marking his sixth career 30+ scoring performance. He also posted a game-high nine rebounds and five assists as the `Dogs overcame an eight-point deficit midway through the second period.
Hamilton has a history of playing well against North Texas (8-14, 3-6 C-USA), scoring 27 points last season, but the Bulldogs could not overcome a 21-point deficit.
This season, the Mean Green have suffered a couple of long losing streaks including the most recent five-game losing skid which they snapped on Thursday with a 70-54 home win over Southern Miss.
North Texas was led by its top two players -- Jeremy Combs (C-USA All-Freshman Team member) and J'Mychal Reese.
Combs registered 14 points and nine rebounds against the Golden Eagles. He is one of only two play-ers in C-USA to currently be averaging a double-double (15.5 points and 10.6 boards). Reese is second on the team in points scored with an average of 15.1 per game.
North Texas ranks third in the league in field goal percentage (.468).
The Bulldogs have still had the upper-hand in the series that dates back to 1953, leading 19-8 despite last season's loss. The two schools became conference foes in 1982 when the Mean Green joined the Bulldogs in the Southland Conference.
After six seasons of battling on the hardwood, LA Tech left to join the America South Conference. The two teams played sparingly before becoming league foes yet again in 2013 in Conference USA.
