LA Tech Begins Four-Game Home Stand versus Charlotte
Feb. 7, 2018
RUSTON – After a long road trip to the state of Florida, Louisiana Tech returns home to begin a four-game home stand starting with a matchup against Charlotte on Thursday night at 7 p.m. inside the Thomas Assembly Center on Karl Malone Court.
The game will be broadcast live by beIN Sports with Mike Gleason and Jason Capel calling the action. Fans can also listen to the Voice of the Bulldogs Dave Nitz and Jack Thigpen call the game on the LA Tech Sports Network on KXKZ 107.5 FM (Ruston) and KRMD 100.7 FM (Shreveport) as well as on the Louisiana Tech X mobile app.
LA Tech (14-10, 5-6 C-USA) was just seconds away from winning its fifth straight conference game, but FIU hit two three-pointers in the final three seconds to hand the Bulldogs a gut-wrenching loss.
Not only will this defeat be on the ‘Dogs mind, so will the news of center Joniah White deciding to end his basketball playing career due to heart-related health issues.
White had started 20 games prior to missing the last three contests. He was averaging 4.1 points and 4.2 rebounds per game. He finishes his career with 124 blocks which ranks fifth in program history.
Stepping up in place of White these past three games has been forward Oliver Powell. He is averaging 10 points and seven rebounds during this span.
Also having to step up recently is guard Amorie Archibald who has continued to impress in place of DaQuan Bracey who made his return to the court after missing five straight games due to a back injury (played 14 minutes versus FIU).
Archibald has made six straight starts at the point guard position for LA Tech, during which time he is averaging 14.5 points and 7.2 assists per game. Against the Panthers, he registered 12 points, seven assists and a career-high seven rebounds.
The opponent, Charlotte (5-16, 1-9 C-USA), is still showing plenty of fight despite being in last place in the C-USA standings and in the midst of an eight-game losing streak.
Evidence of that fight can be found in the 49ers last game against league-leader Middle Tennessee where they were down just one possession late in the game before suffering a 78-73 loss to the Blue Raiders.
The 49ers are currently guided by interim head coach Houston Fancher who has 12 years of heading coaching experience. He took over the program on Dec. 14 after Mark Price was released from his contract.
Charlotte is led by one of the best scoring guards in C-USA in Jon Davis. The junior was a second team All-Conference USA selection last season and is currently leading the team in scoring (15.5) and assists (5.0). He put up a team-high 20 points in the loss to MT.
Also averaging double-digit points is fellow junior guard Andrien White who is averaging 14.5 points per game.
LA Tech leads the all-time series with Charlotte, 5-0. The two teams met for the first time in 2014 when they became league foes in C-USA. The last three meetings have been close affairs with the Bulldogs winning two of them in overtime and defeating the 49ers by six last season in Charlotte.
