LA Tech Closes Out Regular Season at Southern Miss
March 2, 2018
RUSTON – Louisiana Tech will close out the regular season on Saturday afternoon when the Bulldogs head to Hattiesburg to take on their travel partner Southern Miss at 4:30 p.m. inside Reed Green Coliseum.
The live video stream can be seen with a paid subscription to CUSA.tv. Fans can listen to the Voice of the Bulldogs Dave Nitz and Jack Thigpen call the action on the LA Tech Sports Network on KXKZ 107.5 FM (Ruston), KJVC 92.7 FM (Mansfield) and KRMD 100.7 FM (Shreveport) as well as on the Louisiana Tech X mobile app.
LA Tech (16-14, 7-10 C-USA) will be trying to put an end to its three-game losing streak while also trying to move up in the league standings where they are currently alone in ninth place with one game to go.
To do so, they will have to get a road victory. That is something that the Bulldogs have only been able to do once this season out of 10 tries. They were close on two separate occasions this past weekend, but execution down the stretch cost them in the 74-72 loss to UTEP and the 74-64 loss to UTSA.
One of the highlights from last weekend though was provided by senior guard Jacobi Boykins setting yet another program record. He made his 90th three-pointer of the season against the Roadrunners in San Antonio, breaking his own single season record set last season.
The lefty sharpshooter now has a program-record 261 triples for his career which is also tied for the eighth most in Conference USA history.
He continues to pace the squad in points (14.7 per game), rebounds (5.0 per game) and steals (1.1 per game).
Hopefully, the Bulldogs can shoot the ball as well as they did against the Golden Eagles in their previous meeting which came back in January in Ruston. They hit a season-high 14 triples in the 89-66 victory.
Southern Miss (13-17, 6-11 C-USA) comes into Saturday having lost four straight games, including a 73-44 defeat at the hands of the Miners in El Paso. The Golden Eagles have struggled to score the basketball during this stretch, putting up an average of only 57.8 points per game.
Despite the past couple of weeks, fourth-year head coach Doc Sadler has USM with 13 wins this season, the most since the 2013-14 season. They are currently tied with Florida Atlantic for 10th place in the league standings.
They started out winning their first nine games at home but have since lost three of their last four in Reed Green Coliseum.
USM is led by its triple threat at the guard position with Cortez Edwards, Tyree Griffin and Dominic Magee. Each averages double figures in scoring, led by Edwards who is averaging 15.4 points per game. He is also leading the team with 6.4 rebounds per game. Griffin is not far behind in scoring average with 15.2 points per game to go along with 5.4 assist per contest.
A big part of what the Golden Eagles do is take care of the basketball. They rank in the top 15 in the country in assist/turnover ratio (1.53), fewest turnovers (289), turnover margin (4.5) and turnovers per game (9.6).
LA Tech currently trails in the all-time series with Southern Miss, 42-38. The ‘Dogs are gaining ground though as they have won eight straight, including three that have come on the road all by double digits.
