Bulldogs Gear Up for C-USA Tournament
March 9, 2016
BIRMINGHAM, Alabama -- Coaches say a season is broken up into three parts -- non-conference play, conference play and the conference tournament.
After finishing up the regular season, part three for Louisiana Tech begins on Thursday as the 4th-seeded Bulldogs will take on either Old Dominion or Florida Atlantic at 2:30 p.m. at Legacy Arena.
The matchup will be broadcast live on the American Sports Network with Mike Gleeson and Ben Braun calling the action. Along with the TV stations carrying the game, fans can also watch a live stream for free at AmericanSportsNet.com.
LA Tech (23-8) managed to grab a top four seed, which earned it a bye into the quarterfinals, after getting a split in the final weekend of league play to finish with a 12-6 conference mark.
"There are so many good teams in this league," head coach Eric Konkol said. "There have been highly competitive games during conference play with teams that can really score. Going on a neutral site, you are going to have to defend well to be able to advance in this tournament. Anybody can win. It is really what makes March Madness so special. Right now we are just focused on playing really well on Thursday."
The Bulldogs will be led by C-USA Player of the Year Alex Hamilton who is playing at an elite level. Over the last three games, the senior guard is averaging 32 points per game while shooting over 60 percent from the field and from beyond the arc.
The three games have included a triple-double, a career-high 38-point performance and a 33-point scoring effort.
He was also named First Team All-Conference USA while his scoring partner Erik McCree was selected to the second team. The duo is currently the seventh highest scoring tandem in program history.
This marks the third time LA Tech will take part in the C-USA Tournament since joining the league in 2013-14. However, this will be the first time the `Dogs will not be the No. 1 seed after claiming back-to-back regular season titles.
LA Tech is 3-2 all-time in the tourney, advancing to the finals in its first year in the conference and to the semifinals last year. Hamilton is the only Bulldog to play in all five tourney games. He has scored in double figures in all five with an average of 14.8 points per game.
Either way, the Bulldogs will take on a team that they lost to during the regular season. Both losses came in January and both came down to the very end. LA Tech fell 63-61 at FAU (8-24) and 56-53 to ODU (19-12).
