Speedy, Kyser Named to C-USA All-Defensive Team

March 10, 2015

RUSTON - For a third consecutive season the Louisiana Tech duo of the havoc creator Kenneth Smith and the rim protector Michale Kyser were named to the five-person All-Defensive Team, announced by the Conference USA office on Tuesday.

Both Bulldogs claimed two of the five spots last season in C-USA as juniors and also as sophomores in the Western Athletic Conference.

Speedy has anchored a LA Tech defense this season that forces a league-best 16.1 turnovers and is tops in steals per game with 8.55, a category they also rank 12th in the country in.

As the guy who makes the full court press go, the senior guard holds almost every steals record at LA Tech and has totaled 56 steals this season with an average of 1.81 per game. He needs only five more to break the senior record for most steals.

His relentless pressure helped hold opponents to under 60 points on 11 different occasions, forcing at least three steals in eight games with a season high of six versus Nicholls State.

Even if Speedy gets beat by over pressuring opposing players, he knows he has Kyser as a safety net in the paint.

The senior forward notched at least one block in every game but two and had at least three blocks in 16 games. He ranked second in the league with 2.97 rejections per game which also ranks eighth in the country.

The Lancaster, Texas native has etched his name all over the LA Tech record books with his 350+ blocks. He tied his career high with nine rejections versus UTSA, a mark that ranked as the seventh most in the nation in a single game.

Kyser was also the team's leading rebounder with 6.7 per game. He ended the regular season with a bang by grabbing a season-high 14 boards against Southern Miss. He also tied a career-high this season with three steals at Charlotte.

Voting on the awards was done by the C-USA head coaches and media members in each conference city.

As the No. 1 seed in the C-USA Tournament set to take place in Birmingham, Alabama, LA Tech will face the winner of North Texas and Rice on Thursday night at 8:30 p.m. inside Legacy Arena (BJCC) in the quarterfinals. Fans are reminded that tickets are still available for $180 which includes tickets to every game (both men's and women's sessions).
