Konkol Named Finalist for Joe B. Hall Award
April 1, 2016
RUSTON – Louisiana Tech head coach Eric Konkol was named one of 10 finalists for the 2016 Joe B. Hall Award, an honor presented annually to the top first-year coach in Division I college basketball.
Konkol led LA Tech to a 23-10 overall record, the most victories by a first-year head coach in program history surpassing the previous record by three wins.
The Bulldogs had a stellar non-conference season, defeating six teams which played in the postseason. One of those highlight victories came at Ohio State, the program’s first win over a Big Ten school in 30 years. Another came at Florida Gulf Coast who went on to win the Atlantic Sun Tournament and advance to the NCAA Tournament.
During Conference USA action, LA Tech was one of only two teams in the league to defeat both the regular season champions UAB and the tournament champions Middle Tennessee.
The ‘Dogs were picked preseason to finish fifth, but ended the regular season tied for third with Marshall and Old Dominion.
The team continued their dominance at home, claiming a 16-1 record inside the Thomas Assembly Center. They also proved to be good at coming back in games, producing 10 come-from-behind victories including five when down by double-digit points.
A longtime Kentucky assistant, Joe B. Hall was given the task of following the legendary Adolph Rupp at the school. In his first season, Hall finished 20-8, won the SEC and advanced to the NCAA Regional Finals. The recipient of the Joe B. Hall Award will be announced on April 1 at the CollegeInsider.com Awards Presentation in Houston Texas, site of the Men's NCAA Basketball Championship.
