RUSTON - Conference USA Commissioner Britton Banowsky today announced Kenneth Smith as one of 14 student-athletes receiving the 2014-15 C-USA Winter Spirit of Service Award.

The C-USA Spirit of Service Award is designed to recognize the community service efforts of the league's student-athletes, based upon significant community service, good academic standing and participation in their elected sport.

Speedy has been a tremendous ambassador of LA Tech athletics ever since he stepped on campus as a freshman in 2011.

Off the court, he has and continues to represent the athletics department and the University at several community events including Wiggin' Out, a cancer benefits and awareness organization, youth basketball camps and clinics, working with the Boys and Girls Club and reading to kids at local elementary schools.

He recently received his Bachelor's Degree at the winter commencement while majoring in sociology, graduating in less than four years.

On the court, Speedy has staked claim as one of the greatest basketball players in Bulldog history. This past season as a senior, he was named Associated Press All-America Honorable Mention and Conference USA Player of the Year.

The St. Petersburg, Florida native finished the year with 267 assists, the most of any NCAA Division I player in the country, and also ranked in the top 20 in the nation in total steals (69) and assist/turnover ratio (3.00).

He rounded out his career as LA Tech's all-time leader in assists and steals, shattering the previous records.

The Spirit of Service Award is presented three times through the season, with today's honorees representing Conference USA's winter sports: men's and women's basketball, women's swimming and diving, and men's and women's indoor track and field.
