Paul Millsap Garners Bob Pettit Award for Eighth Time
April 14, 2016
RUSTON – For the sixth straight year and the eighth time in the last nine years, former Louisiana Tech basketball great Paul Millsap has been chosen as the recipient of the Bob Pettit Award for 2016 by the Louisiana Association of Basketball Coaches (LABC).
The award is given annually to the most outstanding professional basketball player from a Louisiana college.
Millsap was named an NBA All-Star for the third consecutive year as a member of the Atlanta Hawks who just wrapped up the regular season and will enter the Eastern Conference playoffs, which get underway Saturday, as the No. 4 seed.
The power forward had arguably the best season of his career in what was his 10th year in the league. He led the Hawks in a number of statistical categories including points (17.1), rebounding (9.0 and steals (1.8) per game.
Recently, Millsap scored a career-high 31 points (5-of-7 from three-point range) to go along with 16 rebounds, five blocks, three assists and two steals, becoming the first player in NBA history to tally those numbers which resulted in him being named Eastern Conference Player of the Week.
As a Bulldog, Millsap was a three-time All-WAC selection and became the first player to ever lead the NCAA in rebounding three straight years.
Since 1980, the `Dogs have had more players chosen as the Louisiana professional Player of the Year than any other college in the state – Millsap, Karl Malone and P.J. Brown – for a total of 18 times.
Millsap trails only NBA Hall of Famer Shaquille O’Neal by one for the most times receiving this honor.
The Louisiana Association of Basketball Coaches (LABC) was founded on September 18, 1974 when representatives from fourteen Louisiana universities and colleges met in Baton Rouge for the sole purpose of forming an organization to promote basketball on all levels in the State of Louisiana. It was the first state-level organization of its kind in the nation.
