Derric Jean Shines in Senior Season at McArthur

June 18, 2015

RUSTON - Full court pressure on defense and transition dunks and three-pointers on offense are here to stay for Louisiana Tech men's basketball under new head coach Eric Konkol.

A key element to sustaining this exciting, up-tempo style of play is the point guard position. With the graduation of the all-time career assists and steals leader in program history, Kenneth Smith, and two-time all-conference Bulldog Alex Hamilton being a senior, filling that position was crucial for coach Konkol and the program.

Enter Derric Jean.

After leading McArthur High School to back-to-back district titles as a sophomore and a junior for the first time in school history, the 6-foot-2-inch guard pulled off the three-peat as a senior while also guiding the Mustangs to a 28-win season and an appearance in the Class 8A state semifinals for the first time ever.

"I am excited to coach Derric at Louisiana Tech," Konkol said. "I have known him for a long time as our paths crossed often while working at the University of Miami. He is an athletic and aggressive guard who plays with great energy. He fits in perfectly with how we want to play. Derric is dedicated to development and I'm looking forward to begin working with him soon."

For the season, he averaged 12.3 points, 5.3 assists, 4.0 rebounds and 1.6 steals on the way to being named first team All-Broward County and first team All-State by Source Hoops and the Florida Basketball Coaches Association in the highest classification in Florida.

Jean went on to be selected to play in the Gatorade Dade vs. Broward All-Star game to finish out his high school career for the green and orange before he heads to Ruston to don the blue and red.

The super athletic guard also helped McArthur claim a district title in track and field this past spring, placing second at district and regionals in the high jump with leaps of 6-feet-4-inches.
