RUSTON - The Louisiana Tech men's basketball team is starting to get the island fever as they are just one month away from venturing to the tropical metropolis of Nassau, Bahamas to participate in the `Summer of Thunder' Classic.
The tournament, put on by the Bahamas Basketball Federation, runs from Aug. 2 through Aug. 25 and will feature 14 NCAA Division I schools, as well as three national teams and 11 local teams.
The Bulldogs leave on the 17th and will spend five days in which time they will play three exhibition games at the Kendal G.L. Isaacs National Gymnasium.
On Monday the 18th, LA Tech will face the Pyramid Food Rockets before having a free day to enjoy the island resort of Atlantis.
Wednesday the team will face off against the Bahamas All-Stars, then Thursday against the P.J. Stringers. Friday, the `Dogs will return home.
The trip will be especially important in developing team chemistry and camaraderie with a squad that features four returning starters and the rest being two redshirts, two junior college transfers and five high school signees.
Participating in the foreign tour, something an NCAA Division I team can only do every four years, will allow the Bulldogs to have a maximum of 10 workouts prior to leaving.
Some of the other teams set to be participating include national runner-up Kentucky, North Carolina, Ohio State, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, Ole Miss and Stanford.
The Bahamas is comprised of 700 islands sprinkled over 100,000 square miles of ocean starting just 50 miles off the coast of Florida.
