@LATechHoops Voted C-USA Preseason Favorite

Oct. 7, 2014

IRVING, Texas - Coming off a program record-tying 29 victories and an appearance in the National Invitation Tournament quarterfinals, the Louisiana Tech men's basketball team was chosen as Conference USA preseason favorites on Tuesday, voted on by the league coaches.

LA Tech returns four starters from last year's squad that, for the second straight season, earned a share of the conference regular season title for head coach Michael White.

A trio of Bulldogs - Kenneth Smith, Alex Hamilton and Raheem Appleby - was also selected to the 10-person C-USA preseason team.

Smith was a first team All-Conference USA selection a year ago while also being named the C-USA Defensive Player of the Year. He averaged 7.8 points per game, recording 11 double-digit scoring games.

He also averaged a league-best 7.7 assists per game which ranked second in the nation. The 278 total assists dished out broke the single season program record and C-USA record.

Hamilton was named third team All-Conference USA last season after averaging a team-high 14.5 points per game which tied for 10th most in scoring in the league. He was LA Tech's leading scorer in 12 games, including seven performances of 20-plus points.

The junior also recorded 109 assists and 53 steals, both good for second most on the team.

And despite missing most of C-USA action last season due to an ankle injury, Appleby was the third guard of the impressive starting backcourt chosen to the preseason team.

The senior was averaging a team-high 16.1 points per game last season until he went down in the first C-USA game. Previously, he was named first team All-Western Athletic Conference his sophomore year.

UTEP was chosen second by the coaches and the Miners will be led by preseason team selections Vince Hunter and Julian Washburn. Charlotte received the third highest number of votes. Old Dominion rounded out the top four.

The 2014-15 season tips off for LA Tech on Nov. 14 in Baton Rouge versus Southern.
