Speedy Named to Second Team All-Defense by CBS Sports
Nov. 3, 2014
RUSTON - Not long after Louisiana Tech point guard Kenneth Smith was named the 89th best college basketball player for 2014-15 by CBS Sports, the same publication announced him as a member of the second team All-Defense.
Smith is a two-time conference All-Defensive team member and is the reigning Conference USA Defensive Player of the Year having led the league in steal rate and was ninth in the country in steals per game with 2.50.
"As is often the case with elite perimeter defenders, Smith is an extremely aggressive player who excels both on-ball when staying in front of opposing guards and off-ball when trying to vulture his way into passing lanes to get out in transition," Sam Vecenie of CBS Sports said.
The senior anchored a LA Tech defense last season that held opponents to 60 points or less 11 different times and forced at least 15 turnovers 24 times.
He ended up setting the program record for most steals in a single game with eight versus Middle Tennessee and set the single season program record with 90 steals.
The St. Petersburg, Fla. native has recorded at least one steal in the last 39 games, the longest active streak in the country, and he needs only three steals to set the career record at LA Tech.
He also averaged 3.8 rebounds per game, including a career-high 14 boards in the NIT quarterfinals loss at Florida State.
