@LATechHoops Set for Exhibition Game

Nov. 4, 2015

RUSTON – The Louisiana Tech Bulldogs are back in the Thomas Assembly Center on Thursday night at 6:30 p.m. in an exhibition game versus Southwest Baptist which will serve as its final tune-up for the 2015-16 regular season.

It has been over a five-month process for new head coach Eric Konkol and the coaching staff, as well as the seven returners and five newcomers, but it is a process that has been fun and productive.

“It has been a great five months,” Konkol said. “You dream of being a head coach, running your program and getting to work with great student-athletes. We have had a productive five months and can’t wait for the season to begin.”

The Bulldogs have held two scrimmages so far during fall practice, one being an intrasquad scrimmage and the other being a closed scrimmage versus South Alabama.

Areas that Konkol wants to see improved upon against Southwest Baptist are rebounding and taking care of the basketball, but there is no question that there is a heightened level of competitiveness for the ‘Dogs this season with 56 percent of the minutes gone from last year’s squad.

“We have had really competitive practices,” Konkol said. “I’ve learned from these guys that anything with a score on it, whether it’s a shooting drill or a three-on-three, they really get after it. We have tried to put themselves in those situations as many times as possible. There is opportunity to be realized by several guys who have played limited roles and now there is opportunity to play more.”

In the position to take over the leadership roles are returners Alex Hamilton and Erik McCree who were two of the top three scorers from last season.

“They have been there before,” Konkol said. “They have produced for successful teams. That is the example we want for all of our players. They have been great leaders. They have improved. They have gotten stronger. I think they have really grabbed a hold of what we are trying to do here and they are providing that example for the younger players which is a great thing.”

SBU is a Division II team that plays in the MIAA conference. The Bearcats went 11-18 last season.

Admission is free for the exhibition contest.
