Weatherspoon, White Particiapte in MDA Fundraiser

Nov. 10, 2011

MONROE, La. - Louisiana Tech head coaches Teresa Weatherspoon and Michael White will be two of the many celebrities participating in the Muscle Team® Madness sports dinner to benefit research and patient services programs for the ARK-LA-TEX chapter of Muscular Dystrophy Association sponsored by Evans Oil Company and U-PAK-It at the Ballroom at Vantage Tower in downtown Monroe tonight (Thursday).

Weatherspoon will be this year's "Head Coach" and this year's honoree.

The "Muscle Teams" consist of local athletes and celebrities who are paired with kiddos served by MDA. The Muscle Team® athletes represent a wide range of sports and in addition to WEatherspoon and White, other greats include Greg Monroe (Detroit Pistons), Bryan White (Chicago White Sox, ret.), Mike DeJean (Colorado Rockies, ret.), and local coaches Jeff Schexnaider (ULM Baseball) and Cory Barton (ULM Baseball).

These athletes are flexing their muscles for those who cannot in this one of a kind event that marries Northeast Louisiana's love for sports and its citizen's philanthropic nature.

The evening will feature a VIP meet and greet at 5:30 followed by a dinner program, music by the Josh Madden Band, live and silent auctions, and the presentation of the Muscle Teams beginning at 6:30. Event patrons will be able to bid on sports memorabilia, trips, and even the chance to win an 11 carat Citrine provided courtesy of the Diamond Vault.

About Muscle Team®

The Muscle Team® is one of MDA's signature fundraising programs, benefiting local individuals living with muscular dystrophy, ALS and related progressive muscle diseases in the ARK-LA-TEX area.

The event also will help send area youngsters to a special week at MDA summer camp at Camp Aldersgate in Little Rock. Youngsters with muscle diseases, as well as the many volunteers who help create magic at MDA summer camp each year, enjoy a wide variety of activities designed specifically for youngsters with limited mobility. Some activities include horseback riding, swimming, football, and arts and crafts.

About MDA

MDA is the nonprofit health agency dedicated to curing muscular dystrophy, ALS and related diseases by funding worldwide research. The Association also provides unparalleled health care services; advocates for the families it serves; and invests significant resources educating the medical and scientific communities, as well as the general public, about neuromuscular diseases affecting more than 1 million Americans.

MDA maintains a nationwide network of some 200 hospital-affiliated clinics -- 38 of which are designed as MDA/ALS centers -- that provide unparalleled medical and health care services to adults and children with neuromuscular diseases. Families in Northeast Louisiana are encouraged to visit the MDA Clinics at St. Francis Medical Center, Children's Hospital, and Rapides General.
