RUSTON - After leading his team to convincing wins over UALR (70-52) and Troy (70-46), sophomore point guard Kenneth Smith was announced by the Western Athletic Conference today as the WAC Men's Basketball Player of the Week for the week of Nov. 12-18.
The St. Petersburg, Fla. native averaged 24.5 minutes in both contests, anchoring a defense that held each opponent to 20 points or less in the first half.
Smith recorded a career-high six steals in the win over the Trojans of UALR at the Thomas Assembly Center, tying him for fourth all-time in LA Tech history for most steals in a single game. He also registered a game-high seven boards, seven points and a game-high five assists in the victory.
Against the Troy Trojans in the first game of the CBE Hall of Fame Classic held in Chattanooga, Tenn., Smith tallied a game-high seven assists to go along with seven rebounds.
The point guard racked up a total of 12 assists between the two matchups, and only turned the ball one time.
Other nominees included Denver junior Chris Udofia, New Mexico State sophomore Daniel Mullings, UTSA senior Kannon Burrage, Texas State junior Joel Wright and Utah State junior center Jarred Shaw.
Smith and the Bulldogs return to action today at McKenzie Arena on the campus of Chattanooga versus Southeast Missouri State at 3:30 CT in the second day of the CBE Hall of Fame Classic.
