@LATechHoops Faces Ohio State on Big Ten Network
Nov. 23, 2015
RUSTON -- After making its shortest road trip of the season, Louisiana Tech will now make one of its longest as they travel to take on Big Ten foe Ohio State on Tuesday night inside Value City Arena at 7 p.m. CT as part of the 2015 Basketball Hall of Fame Invitational.
The matchup can be seen on the Big Ten Network with Kevin Kugler and Stephen Bardo calling the action.
With the addition of three newly eligible players -- Jacobi Boykins, Joniah White and LeAntwan Luckett -- to put LA Tech (3-0) at almost full strength last Saturday, the `Dogs were able to crank up the pressure on defense and have more weapons on offense in a convincing 86-67 victory at Grambling State.
Then there was also Derric Jean who registered 11 points, becoming the first freshman since Lonnie Cooper (1995-96) to score in double figures in his first three games which has helped the team get off to their best start since 1998.
"We have had tests and we have responded to certain tests," head coach Eric Konkol said. "We were very happy to get our first road win, but we have a lot of room to grow. We are going to be tested very much on Tuesday at Ohio State. That is the next step for us to see how we can handle that kind of environment."
It has been almost 30 years since LA Tech and Ohio State (2-1) have met on the hardwood in the semifinals of the NIT Final Four at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The Buckeyes went on to win the game and the tournament, getting revenge on Karl Malone and the Bulldogs who knocked OSU out of the NCAA Tournament in the 1985.
OSU opened the season with two straight wins before falling at home to UT Arlington, 73-68. The Buckeyes held a two-point lead at halftime, but the Mavericks opened the second half on a 12-2 run and never surrendered the lead.
The Buckeyes return just one starter off last year's NCAA Tournament team which was led by D'Ange-lo Russell who was the second overall pick by the Los Angeles Lakers in the 2015 NBA Draft. The one returning starter is Jae'Sean Tate who was a member of the 2015 Big Ten All-Freshman Team and is one of three players averaging double-digit points (10.7 ppg).
Their head coach Thad Matta, the all-time wins leader at Ohio State, recently picked up his 300th win. He ranks in the top 50 among active head coaches in victories.
