LA Tech Battles Alcorn State on Monday Night
Dec. 4, 2016
RUSTON – The Louisiana Tech men’s basketball team looks to extend its home winning streak to 12 on Monday night when they face off against Alcorn State at 6:30 p.m. inside the Thomas Assembly Center.
This marks the fourth and final game that is part of the multi-team event that is the California Bears Classic. Thus far, the Bulldogs are 2-1 with wins over Maryland Eastern Shore and Southeastern Louisiana.
Redshirt senior Erik McCree dominated on the basketball court against the in-state foe Lions, registering a career-tying 33 points and a career-high 18 rebounds in the convincing 88-59 victory. It was his second straight double-double and was the most boards pulled down in a single game by a LA Tech (4-3) player since 2011.
The forward continues to lead the team in points (16.6 per game) and rebounds (8.6 per game).
True freshman DaQuan Bracey also had a career night in what was his first career start. The point guard scored a career-high 14 points and dished out a career-best eight assists with zero turnovers.
As efficient as the Bulldogs were on offense, it has been their defense that has been the most impressive. Against SLU, they tied a program record with 13 blocks and limited the opponent to only five three-pointers.
Since allowing South Carolina to score 85 points in the season opener, LA Tech has clamped down on every opponent. The most points scored by the opposition since was California with 68 (only had 57 in regulation). For the last six games combined, the ‘Dogs are allowing just 60.7 points per game.
Alcorn State (2-5) is looking to put an end to a three-game losing streak on Monday. The Braves are in the midst of six straight games on the road, having fallen to Colorado State, San Francisco and most recently an 89-53 setback at Cal.
Reginal Johnson came off the bench to score a team-high 17 points versus the Bears. He has been Alcorn State’s sixth man all season, averaging 13.1 points per game. Averaging the same amount is Marquis Vance who also leads the team in rebounding at 6.4 boards per contest.
LA Tech leads the all-time series over Alcorn State, 2-0, with both matchups coming at neutral sites in midseason tournaments. The first meeting came in 1985 in the Indiana Classic in Bloomington, Indiana with the Bulldogs winning, 82-73.
The second meeting came over 20 years later in 2007 in the Gulf Coast Classic in Biloxi, Mississippi. The ‘Dogs prevailed in that one by a score of 78-69.
