Dec. 5, 2017
RUSTON – Two of the winningest programs in the country over the last half decade just so happen to be less than three hours apart from one another.
Those two teams – Louisiana Tech and Stephen F. Austin – will meet up on the hardwood on Wednesday night at 6:30 p.m. inside the Thomas Assembly Center on Karl Malone Court.
The live video stream can be seen with a paid subscription to CUSA.tv. Fans can listen to the Voice of the Bulldogs Dave Nitz and Jack Thigpen call the action on the LA Tech Sports Network on KXKZ 107.5 FM (Ruston), KJVC 92.7 FM (Mansfield) and KTKC 92.9 FM (Springhill) as well as on the Louisiana Tech X mobile app.
LA Tech (6-1) extended its home winning streak to 11 this past Saturday with a 106-55 rout of Miles College. It is currently the 14th longest active streak in the country.
Bulldog fans got to enjoy seeing senior guard Jacobi Boykins become the 40th player in program history to reach 1,000 career points. He is one of five Bulldogs to reach this milestone since 2014.
Boykins was one of six players to score in double figures against the Golden Bears, posting 12 points. He is currently averaging 13.9 points per game and leads the team in rebounding with an average of 6.0 boards per contest.
They also got to a get a good glimpse at the future of Bulldog Basketball as the four freshmen combined to score 44 points. Guard Exavian Christon led the way, registering a career-high and game-high 15 points while connecting on three three-pointers in 20 minutes of action. Freshmen Amorie Archibald (nine), JaColby Pemberton (10) and Anthony Duruji (10) all recorded career highs in points as well.
Meanwhile, the defense was stout for the fifth straight game. The last five opponents are averaging just 63 points per game.
Since the 2012-13 season, LA Tech has a combined record of 135-45 which is the 14th best winning percentage in the country during that span. Wednesday’s opponent Stephen F. Austin (7-1) is 141-35 which is the sixth best winning percentage.
SFA (7-1) is off to another strong start this season, having won three straight against the likes of Florida A&M, North Dakota State and ULM. The most recent victory over the Warhawks was a dramatic one as guard Aaron Augustin hit a game-winning three-pointer at the buzzer.
Forward TJ Holyfield, a Preseason All-Southland First Team selection, paced the Lumberjacks in that game with 24 points, one shy of tying his season-high. A year after leading SFA in scoring, rebounding and blocked shots, he is doing the same this season with an average of 18.4 points, 7.6 boards and 1.4 rejections per contest.
Also averaging double figures this season for the ‘Jacks are guards Shannon Bogues and Kevon Harris who post 16.3 and 14.9 points per game, respectively.
SFA was the overwhelming favorite to win the Southland Conference according to the league’s preseason poll after finishing as the runner-up a season ago.
Prior to last season, the Lumberjacks won four straight SLC regular season titles as well as three tournament titles which gave them three trips to the NCAA Tournament.
This will be only the 13th time the two teams face off against one another. Each team has won six times, but the Bulldogs have won the last four meetings. The last meeting came in December of 1999 in Nacogdoches.
