#DunkinDogs Take on #DunkCity in Ruston
Dec. 19, 2016
RUSTON – Louisiana Tech and Florida Gulf Coast – two teams known for their high-flying slam dunks – will meet on the hardwood on Tuesday night at 6:30 p.m. inside the Thomas Assembly Center.
The matchup is part of a home-and-home series between the two programs. LA Tech (7-4) went down to Fort Myers, Florida last season right before Christmas and defeated FGCU, 66-63. It was a reunion of sorts as five Bulldog players on that squad hailed from the Sunshine State.
Three Floridians are still on the roster – Erik McCree (Orlando), Jacobi Boykins (St. Petersburg) and Derric Jean (Miami) – and are expected to make their 12th start to try to extend the team’s 13-game home winning streak.
The Bulldogs are starting to really find their offensive rhythm, as if evident by their shooting percentages over the last five games which have produced a 4-1 mark. During that span, LA Tech is averaging 84.6 points per game while averaging 57 percent shooting from the field, 44 percent shooting from three-point range and 76 percent shooting from the foul line.
McCree and Boykins have been doing much of the offensive damage as they lead the team in scoring with an average of 16.7 and 15.8 points per contest, respectively.
McCree has scored in double figures in 10 straight games, nearly averaging a double-double with 9.0 boards per game. Meanwhile, Boykins has been lighting up the nets. He has made at least five three-pointers in four straight games.
Over the last four games, he is 23-of-35 from beyond the arc for 66 percent. He knocked down six triples to help give him a game-high 24 points in LA Tech’s dominating 89-55 victory this past Saturday over crosstown Grambling State.
The ‘Dogs limited the Tigers to just 38 percent shooting and was the fifth time this season holding an opponent below 60 points.
Florida Gulf Coast (7-5) reeled off six straight wins, including victories over Long Beach State, FIU and Siena before droppings its last two games to Georgia Southern and La Salle. The Eagles are coming off an 84-80 loss to the Explorers in a road game in Philadelphia.
FGCU, coming off an Atlantic Sun Tournamet championship and NCAA Tournament appearance, will be a tough challenge for LA Tech as the Eagles currently rank in the top 10 in the country in field goal percentage (50.8) and three-point percentage defense (26.9).
The offensive numbers come from the Eagles’ guard trio of Brandon Goodwin, Zach Johnson and Christian Terrell who all average double figures in scoring. Leading the way is Goodwin who is coming off a season-high 26-point performance against La Salle and is averaging a team-high 16.3 points and 3.6 assists per game.
Florida Gulf Coast will be the first team coming off a Big Dance appearance that LA Tech will host in the non-conference since 2013 and just the fifth since 2007.
