Gents Down Bulldogs in CenturyTel Center
BOSSIER CITY, La. -- The Centenary Gents (5-7) bested the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs (2-8) in the CenturyTel Center Thursday night 82-73 in an offensive shoot-out.
“This game didn’t need to be this high scoring for us to win,” Tech head coach Keith Richard said. “We played better defensively over the past few games, but we just couldn’t get it done tonight.”
Senior Chad McKenzie put the Bulldogs on the scoreboard at the 18:35 mark after Centenary put up a 5-0 lead. The Gents added to the lead with a jumper followed by a pair of free-throws to go up 9-2 with 18:02 on the clock.
The Gents had built up a 15-8 lead by the 15-minute mark, but a three-pointer from senior Marcus Elliot at the 14:02 mark cut the lead to 15-11. Sophomore Brian Baumann connected on his third three-pointer of the half with 12:41 on the clock to push the lead to 18-11.
The Bulldogs responded with an 11-4 run over the next five minutes capped off by a pair of free throws from freshman Kyle Gibson to tie the ball game 22-22. Baumann, however, wasted no time getting Centenary the lead back with his fourth three-pointer of the first half on the ensuing possession.
The Gents outscored the Bulldogs 14-8 for the remainder of the first half and took a 36-30 lead into the halftime locker room.
The Bulldogs finally took the lead at the 11:22 mark with a three-pointer from senior Trey McDowell to put the score at 54-52. Centenary took the lead back with 7:42 left to go in the game with a three from sophomore Tyrone Hamilton for a score of 61-60 and proceeded to run off eight total unanswered points before McKenzie hit a lay up to cut the lead to 66-62. The Gents would remain in the lead for the remainder of the ballgame and would go on to win 82-73.
Tech was led in scoring by McKenzie and McDowell; both with 19 points. Hamilton led the Gents with 27 points.
The Bulldogs return to action Saturday, Dec. 23, in Baton Rouge, La., to take on the Louisiana State Tigers in the Pete Maravich Assembly Center. Tip off is set for 3 p.m., and can be seen on Fox Sports Southwest and will be broadcast on local FM KXKZ 107.5 in Ruston.
