Head Coach Sonny Dykes
"I felt like today’s game was very competitive. Defensively, I like the way we flew around. The offense is getting better. If you go back and look from our first scrimmage to today, we made a tremendous improvement. We are working and competing at a higher level."
"The thing I was really happy about offensively was that we only made one turnover today. We did a much better job taking care of the football. We have to continue to develop a little more continuity, offensively."
"This summer for us is going to be a very critical time. It will give our quarterbacks and receivers a chance to improve."
"I feel really good about where we stand defensively. Several guys stood out today, like Solomon Randle who was very active. Our middle linebacker position between Solomon Randle and Adrien Cole is a strength of our defense. Both of those guys are pretty good. Tank Calais is as consistent as a defensive player that we have right now. He is playing really well at that nickel position and that is the perfect position for him to play. It gives him a lot of freedom to make some plays."
"Offensively, I felt like the quarterbacks held onto the ball too much and we took seven sacks today. We threw the ball 68 times but that is still too many sacks. We have to do a better job of getting rid of the football but that’s something we will work on."
"Overall, I felt like it was a good day. It was very competitive and I thought they did a lot of good things today. We competed at a high level. For us, to come out of a practice healthy is critical and we did that today in a scrimmage situation. Our team has really practiced well together."
"I don’t think we’re a finished product by any stretch of the imagination; we have a long way to go. However, I think we’re improving day in and day out. It is a constant struggle."
On the T-Day Spring Game:
"We came out a little bit flat today. During the first half, they hit a few plays on us but we came around in the second half and stepped it up, made a few plays and forced a couple three-and-outs. I think both groups competed well today."
On the tie score:
(Joking) "It wasn’t a tie. The defense never scored, Coach Dykes just gave them those points. So technically, it was 44-0. They didn’t score any points, we did and they have to face that."
On the speed among the skill positions:
"We have a lot of guys that are very explosive and can run. Ross [Jenkins] and I both feel that - we talk about it all the time - that these guys can run and we have a good shot at making some big plays and scoring a lot of points. What we did out there today with the 60-plus passes and no interceptions, I think we did a good job."
On the aggressiveness of the offense:
"I love it. It catches the defense off guard and you neer know when you are going to hit a big play. Sometimes in a game you need a big play to win. I have no problem with Coach Franklin or Coach Dykes throwing it deep on third and one. I like it, I like being aggressive."
"It’s been a while since I played. Just getting out there, I was so excited I had to find some way to calm myself down. I was just excited to be able to be out there and playing." On the coaches’ confidence in him: "It feels good that they have confidence in me and they aren’t holding my legs against me. It makes me feel good that they are going to be looking for me and to be able to come to me [to make a play]."
On himself and Phillip Livas:
"If both of us can stay healthy, I think we can do some big things for this offense. He’s really fast, I’m pretty fast too. With both of us out there, it should be good."
On the offense:
"It’s just fun. All you have to do is come to the game and watch and you’ll see it is high flying. We’ll go on 15- and 20-play drives - I’m feeling that. Summer is going to be big for us to come in and work out but it is going to be fun."
On physicality of this offense:
"You have to be physical in this offense but you also had to be physical when you are in the trenches in the last offense. Coach Perot has always stressed being physical. However, we do a lot of different things to adapt to this offense."
On the scoring system:
"It didn’t matter to us, we were just all out there competing and having fun. We’re kind of glad it was over. If you do tie, you still have to go back into the locker room with those guys. If you didn’t have to go back into the locker room with those guys, it would be different."
On quarterback competition:
"It’s part of the job. It comes with the position. It really doesn’t matter to me, I just try to go out there and play whether there is someone competing that’s going to push me, like Steven [Ensminger] has. That has really been fun, competing with him. Like Coach Dykes said, when you don’t have competition, you tend to get complacent. That’s when you’re not as good as you can possibly be."
