Louisiana Tech Head Coach Skip Holtz
"They (Rice) got to the edge of the defense, and that is something we've had problems with all year when teams go with the bigger sets. We're a nickle defense with four down linemen, two linebackers and five DBs. From a depth standpoint I'd love to be able to get another linebacker in there when teams start going big against us putting in tight ends. They went back to the play that NC State ran against us. They got big and got to the edge, and we didn't have much of an answer for it.
"I think Rice is a really good football team, and they did a nice job tonight. We knew (Charles) Ross is a great back and he hit his season average of six yards a carry. That's what he does, he was just given a few more opportunities because because they had such a high success rate on third downs tonight. He's a great player and he had great runs tonight. He carried the ball 27 times tonight - he's a workhorse, a big back, and he's a load. The key was we were not able to get off the field. We had them in some third-and-sevens and third-and-tens, but we could not get our defense off the field. We could not get a stop, and I give their offense, their coaching staff and their players an awful lot of credit.
"I don't think it was one common thing they did, but a common thing that showed up (for LA Tech) was that we did not have an edge to our defense. They were able to get around the edge, and when they started getting our safeties wide they would hit a seam up inside and there wasn't anyone there to make a tackle.
"We tried to do some different things to get some momentum going, we even tried a fake punt, but we were down 7, 14, 17 early. I give Rice a lot of credit, they came out here and did what they had to do. They are a good football team and we were not able to get the job done tonight."
David Bailiff, Rice head coach
On the game:
"That was a lot of fun. From the electricity and the great atmosphere of homecoming, the first kick, the way the offense decided to take the ball tonight and how they took the ball down the field to score I thought set the tone for the football game. We overcame a bad snap, we overcame some penalties, overcame a turnover and still got points. It was just that kind of night. It was a kind of night that we did a lot of right."
On the offensive line:
"The offensive line gave its most dominate performance at the point of attack. The O-line protected Taylor, the O-line really opened some nice holes."
On Charles Ross:
"Charles has really matured as a running back this season. You can tell he's really patient at times and waiting on some soft spots or seams to develop or hugging a wall the O-line is creating. A lot of that is Charles' hard work to become an every-down back. In the past it was all about the power, but this year he's learned patience and when to put a foot in the ground and accelerate, and that's really helped Charles' game go to the next level."
On Taylor McHargue:
"Taylor managed the game, threw the ball effectively; I'm really pleased offensively with a lot of individual performances over there."
On the defense:
"The defense was a very dominating performance. The D-line: Cody Bauer went out there and set the tone the second half and made three tackles in a row. At halftime, Cody really rose to the occasion. You can still tell he's growing, and he's a great leader of this team (with challenging his teammates).
On losing his father this week and the moment of silence before the beginning of tonight's game:
"This is an emotional time for me. This football team is amazing -- my family is amazing -- how they've rallied around me. It just makes me more proud and humbled to be the head coach of these great young men. My father was the finest, the finest dad a kid could have. I'm the man I am because of my dad. He's been by my side every step of the way. And so this was very tough tonight to look up to where he stood for seven years and him not be there. But, we'll get through it because of my family, we'll get through it because of these great young men at this university who surround me."
