Amik Robertson Earns FWAA Freshman All-America Honors

Jan. 8, 2018

ATLANTA - Louisiana Tech freshman phenom Amik Robertson’s outstanding rookie campaign was capped off with one of the nation’s top honors, as the cornerback was featured on the 17th annual Football Writers Association of America Freshman All-American Team, which was officially released on Monday.

Robertson becomes the fifth Freshman All-American in the history of Louisiana Tech football, while it marks the third straight season that a Bulldog student-athlete has been honored as a Freshman All-American (Jaylon Ferguson, 2015; Ethan Reed, 2016). Overall, Robertson is the 58th All-American in program history.

As a true freshman on the defensive side of the ball, Robertson terrorized opponents all season long and finished the 2017 season with a team-high five interceptions on the season, including one he returned 45 yards to help LA Tech clinch its fourth straight bowl victory against SMU in the DXL Frisco Bowl on Dec. 20. Robertson’s 141 interception return yards he racked up in 2017 ranks fifth in school history, while his five picks ties him for sixth place in program history for interceptions in a season.

A native of Thibodaux, Louisiana, Robertson started all 13 games for the Bulldogs in 2017, while he tied for first on the team in pass break-ups (6), ranked third on the team in total tackles (51 solo, 11 assists) and had the second-most tackles for loss (7.5) on the season. In the final three games of the 2017 season, Robertson totaled three interceptions, which were returned for 70 total yards and a touchdown.

Robertson’s five interceptions on the season ranked 11th in the nation among FBS programs, while he helped LA Tech’s defense rank seventh overall nationally in total interceptions after the team hauled in 19 picks on the season.

In December, Robertson was named to Conference USA’s All-Freshman Team and was also selected to the league’s Second Team All-Conference squad for his performance on the season.

The Big Ten led the FWAA with six players selected, followed by the SEC (5), the Pac-12 (4) and the ACC, Mountain West Conference and Conference USA, each of which had three players. The 10 FBS conferences are represented on the 30-man team, and there is also a player from an independent school.

The 13-person panel of nationally-prominent college football experts represented each of the FBS conferences along with independents in selecting the team.

Both true freshmen (20 players) and redshirt freshmen (10 players) were considered for the team and are so noted on the list below.
