Head Coach Sonny Dkyes
On impression of first scrimmage:
"I thought our first offense came out, executed well on five or six plays and scored. Then for whatever reason those guys lost focus but they did get it back later. I don't think we played well at the receiver position other than D.J. Banks. I was really pleased with the plays that D.J. played. Our backs did a good job today as well."
On offensive struggles':
"I thought the scrimmage was back and forth. The offense just couldn't string things together but that is typically when you are in a game situation for the first time and all you have been doing is practicing plays. You have down and distance to worry about and having to execute in certain situations. There were a lot of good plays, just couldn't string things together."
On D.J. Banks:
"D.J. has been an inside receiver and is making the transition to the outside. He is a smart kid and works probably as hard as anybody in our program. He has the ability to go make plays. He is also our best guy when the ball is in the air and goes up to make plays."
On Tevin King:
"Tevin King did some good things but needs to be more consistent. There were some plays where he bounced to the outside but if he waited he could have gone up the middle. He needs to learn how to run north and south more but that is like all young running backs thinking they can out the defense on the outside."
On defensive line:
"I thought the defensive line did well today rushing the passer. IK [Enemkpali] was really active and Dirk Tanner is continuing to improve and showed flashes. Andre Taylor stood out at times as well. We are missing some guys up front that we are going to be counting on in the fall."
"Hunter [Lee] did some good things today as he is a good receiver. Tevin showed some flashes but made some mistakes that freshman typically make."
On defensive backs:
"Rufus [Porter] made a lot of plays and Antonio [Mitchum] made a bunch of plays too. They were around the ball a lot today. Jamel Johnson is around the ball a lot too and making plays."
On Rufus Porter:
"Rufus has been battling injuries since he has been here. He knows that he needs to step up and his work ethic has improved. He is also getting more reps which is helping him get better every day."
On Quarterback Play:
"Colby played pretty well. He was sharp and made a lot of throws. We just didn't make a lot of competitive plays at the receiver position. Colby put the ball in a lot of good spots today. The first team offense also didn't turn the ball over. We had over 120 plays today and only turned the ball over once on an interception."
WR Myles White
On wide receiver play during scrimmage:
"The struggles came from a lack of fundamentals and focus. I thought we could have made a lot more plays and left them on the field but that is all going to come with time and we will make those plays. It is almost like a blessing in disguise as it will make us come out and work twice as hard. It is like a slap in the face but we needed it."
On D.J. Banks:
"It was exciting and with D.J. being a newcomer and seeing him step up to the plate like that is great for our offense and an added dimension. At that time in the scrimmage he was the only one make plays and it motives you. You see your teammate making plays and it makes you want to make plays as well.
On what WR need to do to improve:
"We just need to focus. We have the ability to make plays but we just need to buckle down and get focused."
