Quotes from Spring Practice No. 9/Spring Scrimmage No. 2

March 30, 2012

On the scrimmage

“It was good. We were crisp. We had two good days of practice on Monday and Wednesday so I thought today was good. We came out and looked fresh. It was physical like we needed it to be and both sides of the ball executed things pretty well.”

On Wide Receivers

“They caught the ball better. These guys can check the ball and they just have to do it. They did that and made some plays. It wasn’t perfect but it was a lot better than last week.”

On Tevin King

“He has a different gear. When we get a drive going and we put him in because he is fresh and the defense is worn down a bit, he has the tendency to pop one and he did that a couple of times today. He really looked like the guy we thought he would be. The thing Tevin does is that he runs physical for a little bitty guy. He is going to be a great compliment to Ray and Hunter next season.”

On Defensive Line

“I thought they did a pretty good job, especially the first group. IK is still a tough guy to block. He can run, is active and uses good technique. He has been a consistent guy for us all spring. Thought we played a little bit better up front at times and were solid in our gaps in the running game and rushing the passer.

On who stood out today:

“I thought Colby was sharp throwing the football. Quinton was a lot better than he was a week ago. He competed hard and caught the ball better today. Rufus Porter stood out defensively as he made plays and was around the ball a lot. IK has been a hard guy to block consistently. I have been pleased with the way Jamel Johnson has been tackling in the open field as he made some key open tackles today.

On depth:

“It has been good. We have some guys dinged especially at Y receiver position. Greenwalt has a pulled hamstring. Cooper Lewis, a walk-on, did some good things today by making some catches and blocking. The second offensive line is probably the most improved unit on our team. Larry Banks is pushing Oscar at the tackle spot. Cano has been consistent at the center and really starting to come on. I have been pleased with those guys.”
