RUSTON – Junior quarterback Zac Champion completed 15-of-20 passes for 127 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Louisiana Tech offense in a controlled intra-squad scrimmage Saturday morning at Joe Aillet Stadium. Champion, who is competing for the starting quarterback position with Michael Mosley and Joe Danna, tossed a 5-yard scoring strike to tight end Anthony Harrison and a 14-yard touchdown to Earl Griffin during the 95-play scrimmage. The Bulldog offense scored two times on the ground during the morning as Freddie Franklin scored on a four-yard scoring run while Adrian Jackson added a seven-yard touchdown jaunt on the final offensive series. Tech head coach Jack Bicknell said he saw some good things despite the fact a number of his top players were missing the scrimmage due to injury or other personal reasons. “We had so many guys who weren’t able to go this morning due to various reasons,” Bicknell said. “You start taking some of these guys off the field and then you become really inexperienced out here. I saw some good things today and I saw plenty of areas where we have to continue to improve. “We (put the defense on a short field) for much of the morning because we wanted to change things up a little,” Bicknell said. “We didn’t want these guys to get in a rut of just starting at the 30-yard line every time. We wanted it to be more game-like for them.” Franklin led the Tech ground attack with 71 yards and the one score on 13 carries while Jackson added 64 yards on 12 carries and Ja’Mal Titus rushed for 38 yards on nine attempts. “I thought all of the running backs did really well,” Bicknell said. “Freddie is getting plenty of carries. Adrian and Ja’Mal are two guys I basically said the first day of practice, ‘Hey, you are going to move to running back,’ and they’ve done a nice job.” Champion connected on his first five passes of the day before misfiring on his next four. The Alabama native hit on 10 of his last 11 attempts, including the two touchdown passes. Danna was 6-of-12 for 53 yards and one interception while Mosley connected on 5-of-14 for 77 yards and one interception. Defensively, Tech was led by junior college signee Chris Lowery with eight tackles and a sack while Weldon Brown (seven tackles, interception), Torrance Hampton (four tackles, 2 interceptions), Wes Day (6 tackles, fumble recovery, sack) and Anthony Crosby (seven tackles, sack) also contributed good numbers. The Bulldogs will wrap up spring practice next Saturday at noon with the Bone Bowl, the annual spring game.
