Quotes from Spring Practice No. 10

April 2, 2012

On Nick Isham leaving the program:

“He came on Saturday and notified myself and Coach Franklin that he was ready to move on and had already made his mind up. We encouraged him to do that if that was what he was feeling. We believe he left Saturday or Sunday and we just have to move on. Since that time we have had several quarterbacks across the country contact us. Like anything else it opens up opportunities for other players. We will add one or two quarterbacks sometime in the near future. We just have to move on.”

On Isahm’s reason for leaving:

“Neither one of us really asked. It was one of those things that his mind was made up and it was better for him to move on. Quarterbacks transfer so there was a little bit of a concern about it. We talked to him about possibly redshirting him next year. We tried to accommodate him but sometimes guys figure it is best to go and we never really asked him.”

On Quarterback situation this spring:

“We will be fine and work through it. It will be good for Zack Griffith getting more reps. Like I said, we will be making some additions to our roster in the near future.”

On Zack Griffith:

“I thought he looked better Saturday and had a good scrimmage. To me he is getting better and more comfortable. I think he has a good arm but is not completely healed from shoulder surgery this past offseason. He still doesn’t have the velocity on the ball that he had in the past. I think he is getting strong and more comfortable in the pocket. I think that has become a strength of his. He still makes a lot of mistakes but he hasn’t gotten the reps. The next two weeks will be great for him to give him opportunities.”

On QBs looking to bring in:

“I can’t really say but guys from high schools, junior colleges and guys at other institutions that have gotten their releases.

On having to deal with a power outage before practice:

“That was interesting. We had a power outage and weren’t sure we were going to get it in. We were sluggish at times today. We were sharp like we need to be. I think our guys are continuing to work hard and I am continuing to be impressed by them.”

On sluggishness on news and weather:

“I don’t think the news had any affect today. I think the weather was like we talked about with the team. WE need to do a good job of adjusting. When it raining we need to practice in the rain and when it is windy we are going to practice in the wind. None of that stuff needs to bother us. If we dress in the dark that is fine, if we dress in our cars that is fine and if we have to dress in our dorms that is fine too. Our guys got to learn to not be bothered by stupid things. They need to focus on the stuff that matters.”

On the progress in the spring:

“I have been really pleased by what I have seen so far. Our effort has been consistent. When you get your program to where you want it to be you don’t have to coach effort. There are times we still have to just not as frequent as in the past. Now we just concentrate on playing fast and paying attention to details. We don’t want to think we have things figured out. We want to keep improving and keep the accelerator down. That is something that is important to us, not feeling good about ourselves because that is when you start to have problems.”

On Myles White:

“I thought Myles had a good day. He has a good last week and it carried over today. He had a good scrimmage and practice on Wednesday. I think when he loses his legs he needs to learn how to battle through and lean on his technique. When he is fresh and run full speed he is a tough guy to cover. He needs to keep working on details.”

On Shakiel Lucas:

“He has been our anchor in the spring with Jon’al and Justin Ellis being out. Shaq has been our go-to-guy in the middle and has done a great job. He is bigger and stronger and been more physical. He has also been able to play more plays which has helped him.”

On needs to be work on:

“I think we are still trying to get some guys to step up in certain situations. I have been pleased with our second offensive line because that was a question coming in and they have been solid. The corner position has been a little bit tough with just two guys with experience. Dave Clark has been going a lot and Levander Liggins has been out with a toe injury. Brice Abraham has been a pretty solid perform this spring. We need younger guys to step up.”

On Cooper Lewis

“Cooper is a guy that is going to help our football team around here. He is getting more and more comfortable and be consistent. He is strong, fast, physical and catches the ball pretty well. We hope to get a lot of snaps out of him on special teams next season and have him work on his offense.”

On kick and punter returners:

“It is good to see guys back there that we can count on. Craig Johnson I think has one punt return in his career that he took back for a touchdown against New Mexico State. He is one of the guys that we are excited about to have back. D.J. Banks is going to be a solid returner for us. We are excited to see what Tevin King can do on kick returns. We have some weapons and guys that can do some exciting things.”
