Quotes from Spring Practice No. 14

April 11, 2012

On today’s practice:

“Probably not as crisp as we have been. I think sometimes the practices before the spring game you have to grind through it. I wasn’t happy with the way we did it today. I thought we were good most places but a lot of guys had subpar practices. We have to do a better job Saturday of competing and finishing some things.”

On Wide Receivers:

“Colby [Cameron] gives them opportunities to make plays. When the ball is thrown to the right spot they have to make plays. We have come a long way and just need to do it more consistently. Quinton [Patton} has done a good job, Myles [White] has gotten better, D.J. Banks has shown flashes, Jacarri [Jackson] has gotten better just needs to be more consistent and D.J. St. Julien has shown flashes as well. We have some guys doing good things. Jon Greenwalt got back out there today which was good to see him running around a little bit.”

On scoring system for Saturday’s Game:

“Everybody in the country has modified scoring systems that stink. You have to do it to some degree. We have enough depth to split up into teams but you would put a product out there that you wouldn’t want. I think it is better to keep the units together and get some competition and work well together with no glaring weaknesses.”

On Zach Griffith:

“Zach has been good. Today I thought he was ok and wasn’t his best day. In the last week in a half he has gotten a lot better with the opportunity to play. That is the biggest thing, when they see an opportunity to play they compete at a higher level.”

On looking to get out of the Spring Game:

“Just be sharp, take care of the football, tackle well and limit our penalties. Guys start to get sloppy at times and lazy and that is when you get penalties. I want us to be better at the end of the game than we were before.”

On what the players get out of the game:

“It is the last chance for them to compete on the field with pads on until September. I think it is a big deal and you want to see them come out and compete and play hard while carrying over what they learned in the spring to the game.

On overall maturation of the program:

“I have been really pleased. I have seen tremendous improvement from at the quarterback position. Colby is a different guy from when spring started. We have developed depth on our offensive line, which was really important for us to do. We had defensive players step-up. Our linebackers have been a little farther ahead than I thought they would be. We had guys compete at the corner spot. Dave Clark has had a great spring. Kendrick James has had a great spring and IK [Enemkpali] is a different guy than he was. All those guys have gotten better and improved. We need to get some guys off the injuries they have had and get them back and competing.”

On depth:

“It has been big. I feel we have good depth at most of the positions. We still need a second guy at the Y receiver spot. We had some guys banged up and in-and-out of the lineup. Malon Lee has been a bright spot at the H spot. Tevin King has shown flashes, just needs to be more consistent. Our depth has started to show up more than it had in the past.”
