Trent Taylor Selected in Fifth Round of NFL Draft
April 29, 2017
PHILADELPHIA - Louisiana Tech’s Trent Taylor turns 23 years old on Sunday, but the Bulldog receiver enjoyed an early birthday present Saturday as the San Francisco 49ers selected the playmaker as the 177th overall pick in the fifth round of the 2017 NFL Draft.
In his fourth and final season with the Bulldogs, Taylor led Louisiana Tech in receiving for the third straight season after catching 136 passes for 1,803 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns. Along with teammate Carlos Henderson, Taylor was named one of 10 semifinalists for the Biletnikoff Award, which is awarded to the nation’s top wide receiver.
After impressing Bulldog fans for four straight seasons, Taylor wrapped up his collegiate career as one of the best wide receivers to ever don the red and blue. In 2016, the Shreveport native broke the school record for career receptions as he ended the season with a total of 327 catches in his time in Ruston. He also ranks second in Louisiana Tech history with 4,179 receiving yards in his career behind LA Tech Hall of Fame receiver Troy Edwards.
In 2016, Taylor earned first team All-Conference USA honors as a receiver and second team honors as a punt returner. He ended his senior season ranked first in the NCAA in receiving yards and second in the nation in receptions per game (9.7), while he caught at least one pass in 41 consecutive games dating back to the first game of his sophomore season. Joined by fellow wide receiver Carlos Henderson, the duo broke the NCAA record for most receiving yards gained in a single season by two players on the same team (3,338 yards in 2016).
As a punt returner for the Bulldogs, Taylor hauled in 58 punts for 482 yards in his career, including 17 returns for a career-best 178 yards in 2016. In four seasons, Taylor amassed 4,677 all-purpose yards, which ranks seventh in Louisiana Tech history. He totaled 32 touchdowns and recorded 100 yards receiving 20 different times in his career, a number that ranks second in school history.
The NFL Draft continues throughout the day on Saturday with rounds 4-7.
