DALLAS (July 17, 2014) - Louisiana Tech junior Kenneth Dixon was named to the Doak Walker Award Watch List Thursday as the PwC SMU Athletic Forum announced the preseason candidates for the Doak Walker Award. The award is presented annually to the nation's top college running back.
Dixon played in 10 games but due to injuries only effectively played in eight and still accumulated 917 rushing yards and four touchdowns, averaging 6.1 yards per carry. His longest run of the year was a 72-yard sprint at UTEP as LA Tech faced 3rd-and-21 on its own one yard line.
Louisiana Tech's top tailback is one of only two Conference USA running backs listed on the preseason watch list along with Western Kentucky's Leon Allen, also a junior. Dixon was also one of two running backs on the Conference USA Preseason All-Conference First Team Wednesday.
The PwC SMU Athletic Forum Board of Directors will name the semifinalists on November 18, and the Doak Walker Award National Selection Committee will cast votes to determine the finalists, who will be announced on November 24. The committee will cast a second vote beginning on December 1 to determine the recipient. The National Selection Committee consists of former NFL All-Pro and college All-America running backs, media members and selected special representatives.
The recipient of the 2014 Doak Walker Award will be announced live on The Home Depot College Football Awards on Thursday, December 11, on ESPN. The Doak Walker Award Presentation Banquet will be held in Dallas, Texas, in February 2015.
The award, in its 25th year, is named for SMU's three-time All-America running back Doak Walker. It is the only major collegiate award that requires all candidates to be in good academic standing and on schedule to graduate within one year of other students of the same classification.
Honoring the legends of sports for 25 years, the PwC SMU Athletic Forum celebrates outstanding success in athletics. Based in Dallas, the series features major figures from a variety of sports. The PwC SMU Athletic Forum includes four luncheons and the prestigious Doak Walker Award Presentation Banquet.
