Bulldogs Host Colonels in Home Opener
RUSTON – Louisiana Tech (0-1) will open its home slate Saturday when the Bulldogs play their first game on their new turf hosting Nicholls State (1-1) at Joe Aillet Stadium at 6 p.m.
The contest can be seen on ESPN GamePlan and Cox Sports Television while Bulldog fans can also listen to Dave Nitz and Steve Davison with the radio broadcast at KXKZ-FM 107.5 (Ruston) and KEEL-AM 710 (Shreveport) with the pregame show beginning at 5 p.m.
Head coach Jack Bicknell’s team hopes to bounce back two weeks after falling 49-10 to No. 20 Nebraska in Lincoln while Nicholls State is also coming off a loss to the Cornhuskers last weekend.
Bicknell said one of his biggest concerns about the Division I-AA Colonels is their vaunted triple option attack.
“First of all, we can’t look at Nicholls State any differently than we looked at Nebraska,” Bicknell said. “If we don’t come out ready to play, it could be a long day.
“Nicholls State runs the ball so well and the triple option just isn’t something that is easy to prepare for even in two weeks. We have to play sound assignment football and tackle well.”
Offensively, the Bulldogs will hope to rely on the legs of its top two tailbacks in Patrick Jackson and Freddie Franklin and the arm of junior quarterback Zac Champion who will be making only his second collegiate start.
Champion was impressive in his debut, passing for 233 yards and one score while completing 12 of 27 passes.
“I was pleased with Zac two weeks ago,” Bicknell said. “He was poised and I hope to see him continue to improve. This is a game where we simply can’t turn the football over because they are such a ball controlled offense that we might not see it much.”
The contest will mark only the third time Louisiana Tech and Nicholls State have played with the Bulldogs leading the series 2-0. Tech won 56-28 the last time the programs met in 1998.
