DENVER and BATON ROUGE, La. - Louisiana Tech kicker Matt Nelson and linebacker Chip Hester were recognized Monday for their outstanding performances in Louisiana Tech’s 44-38 win over Virginia.

Nelson, a senior from Cibolo, Texas (Steele HS), was named WAC Special Teams Player of the Week after he made all eight of his place kicking attempts with three field goals (31, 40, 45) and five extra points in Louisiana Tech’s 44-38 win at Virginia.  His 14 points are the second most by a kicker in the WAC this season and most against an FBS team.

Hester was named the LSWA Defensive Player of the Week as he led Louisiana Tech with 14 total tackles and ran back his interception of Virginia quarterback Michael Rocco – the second of Tech’s three picks – as the Bulldogs beat a BCS opponent for the second week in a row. Hester’s pick-six was part of a string of 34 unanswered points scored by Louisiana Tech – the second straight week Tech has scored at least 31 unanswered points – while his seven solo tackles led both teams. The Bulldog win marked the first time Tech has started a season 4-0 since 1975 and was the third straight over a BCS team, including last year’s 27-7 trouncing of Ole Miss.
