Louisiana Tech enters the league matchup with a 3-2 overall record and a 1-0 mark in Conference USA play after a 23-22 road win over WKU on Sept. 16. UAB is coming off a bye week after a tough 46-43 road loss at North Texas on Sept. 23. The Blazers are 2-2 overall on the season and 0-1 in C-USA games.

“You go into week six and this is kind of where the line in the sand was drawn where we needed to get through the first five games of the year and now we get into conference play,” head coach Skip Holtz said. “This is kind of the start of a whole new season for us. Hopefully the lessons we have learned in the first five games are going to be able to help catapult us forward because we are going to need every one of those maturing moments as we move into conference play.”

The game on Saturday will mark the sixth meeting all-time between Louisiana Tech and UAB and the first since 2014 when it was announced the Blazers football program was being dropped. The Bulldogs lead the all-time series over UAB with a perfect 5-0 record against the Blazers, including three wins on the road in Birmingham. In 2014, LA Tech traveled to Legion Field and came back with a 40-24 victory over UAB.

  •       The Bulldogs have closed out September with a 3-2 record and 1-0 mark in Conference USA, but recent years have seen LA Tech flourish even more in the month of October. The Bulldogs are 14-2 under head coach Skip Holtz in games played in October, while LA Tech has won seven straight in the month of October and is outscoring opponents 615-363 over that span.
  •       Louisiana Tech is the first C-USA team since 2013 to have their first two league games come on the road. It also marks the first time since 2008 that the Bulldogs will have their first two league games come on the road. LA Tech opened the 2017 C-USA schedule three weeks ago with a 23-22 road win over WKU.
  •       LA Tech's defense has held four of its five opponents this season to ZERO points in the fourth quarter. Over the last three games for the Bulldog defense, LA Tech is allowing an average of 18.3 points per game and have only allowed two passing TDs. In that stretch, LA Tech defense has registered 14 TFLs, seven sacks, 11 pass break-ups, eight QBHs and four forced fumbles.
  •       Quarterback J'Mar Smith has thrown for 1,320 passing yards through five games (including two 300-yard passing games), which ranks second in Conference USA and 23rd in the nation. Smith is also ranked second in C-USA in passing yards per game (264.0) and fourth in the league in passing touchdowns (7).
  •       LA Tech wide receiver Teddy Veal enters the week ranked first in Conference USA and 35th nationally in receptions per game with an average of 6.0 through five games. Veal is also ranked third in C-USA and 55th in FBS in receiving yards (331).
