Higgins, Henderson Continue to Garner Weekly Honors

Oct. 18, 2016

RUSTON, La. - Louisiana Tech’s Ryan Higgins and Carlos Henderson continue to garner national recognition following the team’s offensive explosion in Saturday’s 56-28 victory over UMass at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro.

On Tuesday, it was announced that quarterback Ryan Higgins has been named the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award National Player of the Week in college football.

The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award, announced in 2012 by the Tyler Chamber and SPORTyler, recognizes the top offensive player in Division 1 football who also exhibits the enduring characteristics that define Earl Campbell: integrity, performance, teamwork, sportsmanship, drive, community, and tenacity; specifically tenacity to persist and determination to overcome adversity and injury in pursuit of reaching goals.

In addition, the nominee must meet one or more of the following criteria: born in Texas and/or graduated from a Texas High School and/or played at a Texas-based junior college or four year D1 Texas college.

Higgins recorded 484 passing yards and was 26-of-33 passing with five touchdowns to help lead the Bulldogs to their third straight victory. The five touchdowns tied a career-high for Higgins, which he also had the previous week in LA Tech’s win over WKU. In the last two weeks, Higgins is 59-of-78 passing with 938 yards and 10 touchdowns. The senior quarterback is currently ranked second in the country with 392.2 passing yards per game.

Two days after Carlos Henderson was named the National Player of the Week by three different outlets, including the Walter Camp Football Foundation, the junior has earned two additional weekly honors for his efforts against UMass last weekend.

Henderson was named the offensive player of the week by both Conference USA and the Louisiana Sports Writers Association, it was announced Monday afternoon. This marks the second straight week he has earned both awards.

After racking up 232 yards and three touchdowns in LA Tech’s league victory over WKU on Oct. 6, Henderson followed that performance by notching 12 catches for 326 yards and five touchdowns in LA Tech’s win over UMass. His 326 yards tied for eighth place all-time in NCAA history for most receiving yards in a single-game, while it was also the second-most receiving yards in both LA Tech and Conference USA history. His five touchdowns tied both the school and C-USA record.

Henderson also became the first receiver in NCAA history to have at least 325 yards and five touchdowns in a single game. He became just the third FBS player in the last 10 years to have 200 receiving yards and three touchdowns in back-to-back games.

Henderson is currently tied for the nation’s lead with 10 touchdowns on the season, while he is ranked first in the nation with an average of 147.3 yards per game. His 884 receiving yards on the season is ranked third nationally among FBS players.

In addition to the weekly awards Higgins and Henderson picked up, LA Tech offensive coordinator and outside receivers coach Todd Fitch was named Wide Receivers Coach of the Week by CoachingSearch.com.

The Bulldogs step back into Conference USA play this weekend when LA Tech travels to Miami to take on FIU at 6 p.m. CT Saturday, Oct. 22 at Ocean Bank Field at FIU Football Stadium.
