Tech Coaches Name Players of the Week
RUSTON - Offensive lineman Lester Brown, defensive back Michael Johnson and kickoff returner Eric Newman were named this week's recipients of the Louisiana Tech weekly awards handed out by the Bulldog coaches Monday.
Brown, the junior starting left tackle, earned the Offensive Player of the Week award for his efforts in the Bulldogs 42-34 win over Nevada. The junior college transfer anchored a Tech offensive line that paved the way for the Bulldogs to rush for over 200 yards and pass for almost 300 yards in the win. Brown also kept Nevada defensive lineman Jorge Cordova, who entered the game ranked No. 2 in the nation in sacks, from recording a sack during the contest.
Johnson, a senior safety from Dallas, Texas, earned the Defensive Player of the Week award after recording five tackles, including four solo stops, in the Tech win. Johnson also recorded a career-high and a Tech season-best four pass breakups while patrolling the Bulldogs secondary.
Newman, the sophomore from Oak Grove, earned the Special Teams Player of the Week award for his efforts on the Bulldogs kickoff return unit. Newman returned a pair of Nevada kickoffs for a 35.5 yard average, including a career-long of 47 yards in the first quarter setting up a Bulldogs field goal that cut the Nevada lead to 14-3.
