RUSTON - When Louisiana Tech hosts Southern Mississippi this Saturday at 6 p.m. at Joe Aillet Stadium, the game and all of its surroundings will have a special feel to it.
Not only is the game going to be the first meeting between Tech and USM as Conference USA rivals, but it's a "Weekend of Champions" theme in Ruston. In addition to the football game, Saturday's events include the Tech Hall of Fame induction and the reunion and recognition of the 1973 National Championship team.
Saturday begins at 10 a.m. with the Tech Athletics Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony held in the Waggonner Room of the Thomas Assembly Center. The Class of 2013 includes O.K. "Buddy" Davis, Bill Galloway, Walter Johnson, April Malveo and George Stone and the event is free and open to the public. In addition to the induction ceremony, the group will also be honored during halftime of the game that night.
Members of Tech's 1973 national championship football team will also be in town for the game as the group celebrates the 40th anniversary of its historic season. Led by six future NFL stars, a Hall of Fame head coach and a roster full of dedicated young men, the 1973 Bulldogs lost their season opener before reeling off 12 straight victories, including a 34-0 win over Western Kentucky in the Camellia Bowl in Sacramento to claim the national title. This group will also be recognized on the field Saturday during the break between the first and second quarter.
Tech fans planning to tailgate prior to the game can plan their menu around gumbo as members of the Lady Techster softball team will begin judging around 3:30 p.m. Plaques will be awarded for the best prepared food, the best decorations and the largest group.
The Louisiana Tech Alumni Association Tailgate will officially begin at 3 p.m. at Argent Pavilion as this week's menu includes chicken and sausage gumbo provided by Scott's Catfish and Seafood in Ruston.
At approximately 4 p.m. the Bulldog football team is scheduled to arrive from Monroe and will participate in the Walk of Pride through Tailgate Alley as Tech fans are entertained by the Tech Band of Pride.
Gates to Joe Aillet Stadium will open at 4 p.m. Due to increased Homeland Security mandates for athletic stadiums across the country, fans should know that all bags are subject to search on entrance into Joe Aillet Stadium.
The Ruston Brick Kids Zone is also a big part of the pregame festivities at Joe Aillet Stadium. Located on the southeast hill outside of the Thomas Assembly Center, the Ruston Brick Kids Zone will open at 3 p.m. and will contain inflatables, games and much more.
In addition to the football game, the Lady Techster volleyball team will be playing their final home games this weekend. The Lady Techsters will host Florida Atlantic Friday night at 7 p.m. and UAB Sunday at 1 p.m. Admission is free.
