Ryan Allen Named Semifinalist for Ray Guy Award

Ryan Allen is one of 10 semifinalists for the Ray Guy Award.

Nov. 11, 2011

AUGUSTA, Ga. - Louisiana Tech punter Ryan Allen, the national leader in punts inside the 20 and inside the 10, has been named one of 10 semifinalists for the 2011 Ray Guy Award.

Allen, a native of Salem, Ore., is currently ranked sixth in the nation in punting with an average of 46.1 yards per punt. The junior leads the nation with 32 punts inside the 20-yard line and 17 punts inside the 10-yard line this season.

The redshirt junior has sent 23 punts (38 percent) over 50 yards including a 72-yard punt at Mississippi State that ranks fourth longest in school history. He now has four of the program's Top 10 punts listed in the school's record books. Over 53 percent of his punts have been downed inside the 20-yard line while only four of his 60 punts on the year have been for a touchback.

Allen is averaging approximately 5.0 seconds per punt in hang time this season, forcing 20 of his 60 punts to be fair caught.

The Ray Guy Award - named for football's premier punter - honors the nation's best collegiate punter. The Augusta Sports Council created the award in 2000. Along with awards such as the Heisman Trophy and the Doak Walker Award, the Ray Guy Award honors one of the most important members of any football team. The ASC presents the award live each year on the Home Depot ESPNU College Football Awards Show broadcast from Orlando, Florida.

The Ray Guy Award winner is selected by a national voting body of Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) coaches, sports information directors, national media and former Ray Guy Award winners. Punters are evaluated on their overall statistics and contribution to the team. Particular emphasis is place on the following statistics: net average, percentage of total punts inside the 20-yard line and percentage of punts not returned.

Allen and Louisiana Tech play at Ole Miss on Saturday, Nov. 12 in a 6:30 p.m. non-conference tilt televised by CSS and CST.
