RUSTON - Louisiana Tech fans will have an opportunity to experience a basketball-football doubleheader Saturday when the Lady Techsters host in-state rival LSU and the Bulldogs welcome Conference USA foe Tulsa.
Teresa Weatherspoon and the Lady Techsters will tipoff against LSU at 1 p.m. at the Thomas Assembly Center as fans can watch the two most storied women's programs in the state of Louisiana. The two programs have combined for 49 NCAA Tournament appearances (27 by LA Tech, 22 by LSU) and 15 NCAA Final Fours (10 by LA Tech, 5 by LSU).
Each program has seen 16 players selected in the WNBA Draft while LA Tech has seen a total of 21 alums earn roster positions on WNBA teams in the regular season or in preseason camps. Tech ranks No. 2 all-time in NCAA Division I history in wins with 1,031 while LSU has claimed 822 victories in its history. The two programs have played 28 times with each team winning 14 times in the series.
Saturday will be Faith and Family Day for both the basketball and football contests. Included in the Faith and Family Day events is a free concert by the Rhett Walker Band which will begin at approximately 3:30 p.m. in the Thomas Assembly Center. The Rhett Walker Band is a Christian music group led by the 25-year-old son of a preacher who was born and raised in the South.
It's also Faculty and Staff Appreciation Day as all Louisiana Tech employees can purchase $5 tickets for the basketball game. Also, anyone who has a ticket for the Bulldog football game can also purchase a $5 ticket for the women's basketball game. The ticket booths of the Thomas Assembly Center will open Saturday at 11 a.m. and fans can purchase tickets to either game.
Free Lady Techster schedule magnets and individual player posters (Kanedria Andrews) will be given away to the first 250 fans through the Thomas Assembly Center doors on Saturday. Doors will open at 11 a.m.
The Bulldogs lead the all-time series against Tulsa 7-2, including a 4-0 record in home games against the Golden Hurricane.
The Louisiana Tech Alumni Association Tailgate will officially begin at 3 p.m. at Argent Pavilion as this week's menu includes chili provided by Bill Cox. At approximately 4 p.m. the Bulldog football team is scheduled to arrive from Monroe and will participate in the Walk of Pride through Tailgate Alley as Tech fans are entertained by the Band of Pride.
Gates to Joe Aillet Stadium will open at 4 p.m. Due to increased Homeland Security mandates for athletic stadiums across the country, all bags are subject to search on entrance into Joe Aillet Stadium.
The Ruston Brick Kids Zone is also a big part of the pregame festivities at Joe Aillet Stadium. Located on the southeast hill outside of the Thomas Assembly Center, the Ruston Brick Kids Zone will open at 3 p.m. and will contain inflatables, games and much more.
It will be Senior Day for the Bulldogs on Saturday as 23 Louisiana Tech seniors will be honored during a pregame ceremony on the field prior to kickoff.
